Motorcyclists: Watch out for those trucks.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Motorcyclists: Watch out for those trucks.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

This happens everyday in Cambodia, so just a reminder to all motor-bikers that trucks have priority on Cambodian roads, even when they don't. A lot of the truck drivers don't have a licence, or have any notions about road rules and road safety.

Saturday, May 20, 2017
Today at 11:20 in the village of Chong, a truck driving in direction of Siem reap from Phnom Penh hit a motorcycle, killing the driver instantly and leaving his wife, who was the passenger, in a critical condition in hospital. According to police, the truck was driving way too fast through the village near a market.
The truck driver tried to escape but the motorbike was caught under the truck.

Yes, heed that advice! How my encounter with these these crazy drivers in my daily commune on frequent basis, be a chicken and give them way. Not worth it.

Saw that happened when I was chilling out with the tuk tuk mate at a Sokimex gas station, aint pretty.

This is what happened to the bike. Don't think you need the video.

Accidents like this one are not exceptional, but this is nasty. Newbie moto-drivers in Cambodia should keep in mind that larger vehicles, particularly trucks, will probably not give way to you, even if you are in the right and the truck is on the wrong side of the road or does not have priority.
This is not meant to deter people from riding motorbikes, just a heads-up for people who are not used to driving here to be attentive.

As a motorbike driver in Cambodia one should always give way to bigger vehicles or risk getting crushed/killed/maimed. It's got nothing to do with what's right or fair.. It's about self preservation.

Everyone is not equal over here (as they are supposed to be in barang countries).

while i somewhat i agree doc, otherwise i would not live to troll today. these fuckers drive as though they own the road driving in the middle of late on smaller roads on daily basis. in this very incident, the fuck was speeding fast, hit and tried to make run fortunately the bike was stuck under the wheel and could not accelerate....he was gonna get a beat down to death, by the tuk tuks and motodops...fortunately the useless cops who happpened to station nearby the one way bridge intervened.

Agreed. No matter how many precautions one might take, if luck is not on your side, you could get rammed by human trash in large vehicles like in the article above..

Truck vs motorbike. The motorbike doesn't stand a chance.

8 August 2017. Around midnight.
Two young people, a man and a woman aged 17 and 18, were killed on the National Rd 1 in the village of Watta, commune Korki district, Kien Svay district, Kandal province, in a particularly nasty accident. They were traveling in the direction of Phnom Penh to Kean Svay on a Honda Dream motorbike when they hit or were hit by an oncoming Volvo truck (3C-7592). RIP
