Direct from CPP news; lol. Very subtle. How to win elections by eliminating the opposition.
CNRP's Candidates Resign
Published: 12/05/2017 13:14
Phnom Penh (FN), May 12 - Commune Council candidates for the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP)'s have resigned.
Letters of resignation were sent separately to the CNRP, on May 8 and 9, 2017.
"I hereby resign my candidacy due to my capacity and health problems," the candidates wrote in the letter.
"I foresee that CNRP could not ensure the interest of my family, society, and the people," the letter added.
The CNRP has been bogged down with infighting amongst their candidates.
Some of them left and joined Cambodian People's Party (CPP).

Opposition Seeks to Reverse Prohibition of Election Rallies
May 15, 2017
The opposition CNRP has requested that the national election body help reverse a recent decision to ban election rallies on the capital’s major streets, a party vice president and a spokesman for the National Election Committee (NEC) said on Sunday.
In a letter last month, Phnom Penh governor Pa Socheatvong told the local branch of the NEC to inform political parties of the ban for the two-week campaign period, which begins on Saturday and ends on June 2, two days before the commune elections.
Areas that are off-limits include parks abutting the Royal Palace, Wat Phnom and Independence Monument, and sections of Norodom, Russian, Monivong and Preah Sihanouk boulevards.
The measures were designed to protect “public order” and reduce traffic congestion, City Hall spokesman Met Measpheakdey said last week.
Political analyst Cham Bunthet said Mr. Socheatvong’s order violated the Constitution.
“There’s no policy—no law—to prevent gatherings or marches. That’s guaranteed by the Constitution,” he said. The ban was “more political than technical,” he added.
“Intentionally, they don’t want a lot of big marches in the city…. It’s an opposition stronghold in Phnom Penh,” he said.

CNRP begins removing placards featuring Rainsy
The CNRP has begun replacing its signage around the nation with new boards that display only the party’s rising sun logo, officials said yesterday, a change necessitated by amendments banning the use of former opposition leader Sam Rainsy’s image that are expected to pass the Senate today.
Placards featuring founding Cambodia National Rescue Party leader Sam Rainsy and his former deputy and current party leader Kem Sokha clasping hands alongside the logo have been on display ever since shortly after the two leaders merged their parties to form the CNRP five years ago yesterday.
However, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party last week passed new changes to the Law on Political Parties through the National Assembly that would allow for the forced dissolution of any party that uses the image, voice or written materials of a convicted criminal.

Re: New Political Law Signed - Major Game Changer ?
Looking back, the signing of what was known as the "new political law", has allowed for significant changes on Cambodia's political front.
Analysis: Cambodia’s government learns the art of ‘lawfare’
Mon, 9 October 2017
- On Friday, all the pieces fell into place. The Ministry of Interior, a day prior, had primed the media, instructing them on how to report the day’s events. The government’s investigation and filing to the Supreme Court that called for the main opposition party to be dissolved was all done by the book.
It was all legal, government spokesmen said. But there was never any doubt that the Cambodia National Rescue Party’s impending demise would be painstakingly bureaucratic, that it would adhere to the letter of the law. The ruling party made sure of that – they crafted the law themselves.
The Cambodian People’s Party’s swift passage of changes to the Law on Political Parties, which make the dissolution of the CNRP a likely reality, was the latest step in Prime Minister HE’s tilt towards “lawfare” – using, and even rewriting, the law to eliminate political threats.
The Friday launch of the legal case to disband the CNRP was the fruit of that labour from eight months ago, although it also yielded immediate results in February with the forced resignation of former opposition president Sam Rainsy. His leadership was deemed illegal under the changes due to his prior criminal convictions, which are widely perceived as politically motivated.
The Supreme Court’s decision on the CNRP’s existence will be final, with no opportunity for appeal.
“HE has masterminded this entire strategy from beginning to end . . . The inescapable fact is that the ‘law’ is a scalpel, but it is wielded by a dictator.” [said Lee Morgenbesser, a researcher on authoritarian regimes in Southeast Asia at Australia’s Griffith University.]

Re: New Political Law Signed - Major Game Changer ?
Just a couple of points. 1) The opposition party CNRP members have been elected to the parliament yet keep boycotting each sitting day. They cannot claim to be government members if they don:t go to work.... I am surprised that HE has not drafted a law that says if you miss x amount of sitting days you can be sacked.
2) You cannot expect the people who voted for you to represent them to stay loyal and support you if you piss off overseas instead of standing up for your constituents rights and representing them at every occasion.
I understand they have some fear of the ruling party but why did they "apply for the job" if they don't want to do it properly.
