New mum sold drugs to pay hospital fees

A woman arrested for selling crystal methamphetamine from her bedside in a Kampot hospital said she committed the crime to pay medical bills for the baby she had just delivered.
Thi Kanha, 31, was arrested on Tuesday along with her friend Chhun Senghuong, 34, and Ms. Senghuong’s Chinese boyfriend, 50-year-old Liv Sira.

Major General Mao Chanmakthurith, chief of Kampot police, said a nurse at the provincial referral hospital alerted officers to the crime.
“They were arrested by our police at the hospital,” he said, adding that officers seized eight small packages of crystal methamphetamine from the trio.

Kong Sameth, a local anti-drugs police officer, said Mr. Liv and Ms. Senghuong had gone to visit Ms. Kanha in hospital on Tuesday evening. Ms. Kanha had given birth six days earlier.

During the visit, Mr. Liv and Ms. Senghuong gave Ms. Kanha drugs to sell in hospital, to make enough money to pay medical fees for the delivery of her child.
“Six packages were seized from Ms. Kanha and two packages from the Chinese suspect,” Mr. Sameth said.

The three suspects have been accused of drug dealing and face between one and three years in prison. They have all been detained and will be sent to the provincial court for questioning today.
