PPP Police Blotter thread

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

A beer truck with no brakes, whatever next ?

Truckful of beer more curse than blessing
Thu, 12 January 2017

Alcohol and driving are always a dangerous cocktail.

But this week in Phnom Penh, alcohol was the villain without even being consumed when a couple had their home’s windows shattered on Wednesday by an out-of-control beer truck.

Police said the driver was speeding when the brakes failed and he crashed into a parked car, which then hurtled into the house in question.

Luckily there were no injuries and beer reps compensated the damage.

Burglar’s watery escape drenched in mystery

A busted burglar took refuge in a Por Sen Chey pond after his prospective target unexpectedly came home early on Tuesday.

The fleeing thief jumped into the vegetated water while his would-be victim raised the alarm.

Local authorities and fellow villagers surrounded the marsh, but saw no trace of the slippery snatcher.

Whether he escaped the area, remains hidden in the reeds, or simply drowned is still up for debate.

Anarchist adolescents let off with a warning
10 February 2017

The Sharks and the Jets pale in comparison to the sword-swinging gang fights in Oddar Meanchey’s Anlong Veng commune.

Police on patrol say they spotted two groups fighting complete with swords late on Wednesday.

The brawl was broken up and the weapons and two motos were confiscated.

The three captured youths were only asked to sign a contract pledging not to cause “anarchy” like that again, and their parents have been told to educate their kids before letting them out.

Drowsy chicken thief fails to fly the coop
Mon, 13 February 2017

Why did the chickens cross the road? Because they were stolen - or at least such proved the case in Kandal province on Friday.

A local man, who is a known thief, was spotted carrying the chickens away from their roost when the owner saw him and shouted for help.

The man dropped the birds and fled home, where he nodded off to sleep.

Having recognised the poultry pincher, however, the victim filed a complaint and police arrested the recidivist in short order.

Never mind about the driver, just save the beer.

Tears flow as owner of beer-laden tuk-tuk hit
Thu, 9 March 2017
Touch Sokha

It's no use crying over spilt beer, but a car slamming into your beer-laden tuk-tuk might elicit a sniffle or two, as one capital motorist learned on Tuesday.

A woman was driving down the street in Chroy Changvar district when her car got a flat tyre and veered across the road, causing damage to three vehicles including a beer-bearing tuk-tuk and minor injuries to two.

Police impounded the vehicles to the station for further legal action.

Woman hits musicians for not playing her tune
Tue, 21 March 2017

Hitting the right notes didn’t save two musicians from being hit when a woman attacked them at a wedding on Sunday in Phnom Penh’s Por Sen Chey district for not playing a song she requested.

The angry guest hopped on stage and slapped the players when they played another man’s chosen tune before hers.

Dancing was halted and police were called to intervene, but the woman locked herself inside the house, and refused to come out, though the musicians filed a complaint with cops nonetheless.

Suspect eludes cops by walking out front door
Fri, 31 March 2017
Hopes of catching a cigarette-delivery-man-turned-alleged-jewellery-thief went up in smoke when he walked out of the police station without giving his name on Monday in Phnom Penh’s Kakab commune.

While dropping off smokes for a client who was busy in the kitchen, the suspect spotted her 4-month-old daughter wearing a platinum necklace and allegedly took it.
Police were alerted and called everyone to the station, but were unable to solve the conflict as the suspect kept denying the theft.

When both accused and accuser went to a shrine to swear his innocence, authorities realised they hadn’t taken down anyone’s info on paper.

Call this drunk tour guide Rip ‘van’ Winkle
Wed, 26 April 2017

A drunken tour guide redistributed his hangover among 10 tourists in Pursat’s Krakor distirct when he crashed his van into a bridge railing on Sunday morning.
According to police, the van was carrying a dozen tourists from Pursat’s Boribor district and was returning from a trip to a local waterfall, where the beer also flowed.

The driver returned to the van drunk and proceeded to fall asleep while driving across the bridge, causing his van to careen into the balustrade and injure 10 passengers.
According to the van’s owner, the guide had not received permission to take the tourists out for a spin.

Incredible news. Those nice honest KTV owners might even sell your motorbike if you drink too much and leave it as collateral. Be warned.
(You know who you are.)
Karaoke night cost man a song, nearly his moto
Fri, 9 June 2017
A capital man’s mammoth KTV bill almost cost him his motorbike in Por Sen Chey district. After racking up $111 in costs, which our crooner couldn’t pay, he offered his set of wheels as collateral.

Upon his return on Wednesday he was told a fib; the bike had been sold. When cops were called in to mediate, the man paid his original tab and the KTV owner returned his ride.
