Two trucks crashed into the same train in separate incidents about an hour apart on Saturday in Kampot’s Angkor Chey district, according to local authorities.

Touch Chanthy, district deputy traffic chief, said yesterday the accident caused three hours of congestion, in addition to damage to the trucks and train.

According to Chanthy, the first truck crashed into the train as the train was crossing the road, breaking a barrier and knocking off the last carriage. The speed of the truck dragged the carriage into the middle of the road.

An hour later, while authorities were surveying the accident, another truck with faulty brakes crashed into the same carriage, which was still in the road.

A man was killed in the Por Senchey district of Phnom Penh yesterday when a cargo train ran over him and dragged his body about 100 meters.
Chom Chao commune police chief Sao Sarith said the man was killed at about 2am by the train on its way to Sihanoukville.

Police identified the victim as Mark Chhun, 29, who lived with his siblings in the commune.

“He had his right leg severed, a big cut on his head, a serious injury to his shoulder and bruises all over his body.
“He died instantly,” Mr. Sarith said.

“We cannot say exactly if he was drunk or not, but he was probably drunk because he had been missing from home since 5pm and at about 2am the people around there informed us,” he added.
Mr. Chhun’s body had been handed over to the family for the funeral, Mr. Sarith said.

Sleeping drunk run over by train
A train ran over a drunk man who was sleeping on the tracks, killing him instantly, in Kandal province’s Kandal Stung district yesterday.

Tbeng commune police chief Puth Sokunthea said the incident happened in the early hours of the morning and the man had been sleeping on the tracks after drinking rice wine at a nearby Buddhist ceremony.
“It happened about 2am. The train was on its way from Phnom [Penh]to Kampong Som,” Mr. Sokunthea said.

“He was in town to attend a Buddhist ceremony for his mother in their hometown and he was drinking some wine with his friends. While drunk, he sat on the train tracks to rest and fell asleep,” he added.

He added that local police had already educated people in the commune to be cautious around train tracks, having even distributed leaflets to that effect.
He also noted that the victim will likely not receive any form of compensation as the train had the right of way and the victim was at fault.

Sleeping man killed by train

A freight train killed a drunken man as he slept on tracks in Kampot province on Sunday night.
Police identified the victim as Sao Run, 48. He was killed instantly by the train, which was on its way from Sihanoukville to the capital.

Chhun Soeun, chief of staff at Teuk Chhou district police, said Mr Run had been out drinking with a friend and had stopped to rest on his way home when he fell asleep on the tracks.
“He drank almost every day and would often sleep on the tracks, but he knew the line was operational,” Mr Soeun said.
