Rogue elephant captured in Mondulkiri

The rogue bull elephant Mai was finally caught yesterday by a team of experts from the Tamao Zoo and Rescue Center after creature killed its owner and fled to the forest three days ago.

On Tuesday, two female elephants were released in an attempt to lure Mai out of the forest, but the females joined the bull and would not return. All three were successfully captured yesterday.

“In capturing the male elephant, the experts used trucks and modern devices such as tranquilisers, chains and two female elephants as the lures as well,” said To Meng, Sre Ampoum commune deputy police chief. Meng also said the elephant had been terrorising tourists visiting Bousraa Waterfall for the past few days.

“In fact, Mai wanted copulation, but its owner did not satisfy him and attempted to confine him; therefore, it became furious and killed its owner,” Meng added.

The bull elephant may have been in musth – a condition in which testosterone spikes and elephants become aggressive – at the time of the attack...

Am I missing something here ? Man-killing elephant for sale ? Are they kidding or what ?
The elephant, which transported tourists around the popular Bosra waterfall in Pech Chreada district, trampled and gored its owner to death in front of onlookers on September 19.

Pich Sotheary, chief of police in Sen Monorom district’s Romnea commune, said about 10 families— including the family of Pop Sreang—have claimed part-ownership of the elephant, and that some have demanded a hefty sum from potential buyers.

“The owners are demanding some money before handing over their elephant to a new owner as compensation,” Mr. Sotheary said. He added that he had heard that the owners were seeking $30,000 for the animal, but hadn’t spoken with the families himself.

Let's hope this will be a happy ending for Bak Mai,the rampaging elephant who turned on his owner and killed him in September. He was sold for $17,000 - asking price was $30,000. A real bargain.

Killer Elephant Finds Home at Foundation
by Phan Soumy | December 1, 2016

An elephant that killed its owner in September in Mondolkiri province has been sold to a foundation in neighboring Ratanakkiri province, the organization said on Wednesday.
His foundation agreed to buy the elephant, named Bak Mai, for $17,000 early last month from 15 families, he said, though the full amount is yet to be paid.

The plan was to walk with the 32-year-old male elephant through the jungle to the foundation’s headquarters near O’Katieng waterfall in Ratanakkiri, about 170 km away, he explained. Once at the foundation, Bak Mai would be left alone in the protected forest to be rehabilitated, he said.

Pang Pich, site manager for [the foundation] Airavata, said he had been visiting Bak Mai since October, and found that the families who owned the elephant had tied it to a tree and left it in the mud to starve.
Bak Mai was a strange elephant, he said, recounting how on Saturday it began to shake uncontrollably and refused to keep moving, before making a run for the forest. The elephant was recaptured by Mr. Pich’s mahouts, as well as villagers nervous about their farms.

Mahaich Hong, 38, a resident of Mondolkiri’s Pech Chreada district and the caretaker of nine elephants, said that while male elephants frequently ran off, it was rare for one to hurt or kill its owner, as Bak Mai had done to Pop Sreang, 55...

Nice to have some feelgood news in this follow-up story on the elephant that trampled his mahout in September 2016.
Bak Mai, the "rampaging elephant" is doing well in his new home after being rescued. The new owners are even looking for some girlfriends for him in the hope that he will breed. His previous violent behaviour is put down to mistreatment and a nail found embedded in his trunk; the owners are optimistic while cautiously monitoring his recovery.

An elephant trampled its owner to death yesterday in Mondulkiri province while it was being used to carry foreigners on forest trips.

Churng Tiem, 45, a member of the Pnong hill tribe who lived in Putang village, was stomped to death near the Oromis resort about five kilometers from the provincial town of Senmonorom.
Provincial police chief Touch Yorn said it was the elephant mating season and the bull elephant may have become angry with its owner.

The incident happened in the afternoon when the elephant was being used to carry foreign backpackers to the resort.
“A report said that a rampaging elephant trampled Mr. Teim to death and it ran off into the jungle shortly after the attack,” Brigadier General Yorn said.

Brig. Gen. Yorn said the elephant was still in the forest and villagers feared it would come back.
“We will tell experts from a wildlife organization to recapture it using a tranquilizer gun.”
Provincial police officer Khem Nara said five officers were sent to the scene.

“After attacking its owner, the elephant stood around the body,” he said. “It then disappeared into the forest and we took the body to the village.

Killer Elephant Shot Dead After Smashing Villagers’ Homes
April 7, 2017

An aggressive bull elephant that fatally trampled its owner was shot to death on Friday after it smashed six houses and frightened villagers after tromping out of the Mondolkiri province forest into which it had fled earlier this week, officials said.

The elephant, Toak, had charged out of the forest on Thursday afternoon, “but we managed to scare him back into the forest using fireworks,” Jemma Bullock, program manager for the Elephant Livelihood Initiative Environment, which sought to help the villagers, said on Friday.

Overnight, while authorities were waiting for a team of veterinarians with tranquilizer guns to arrive from Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center “the elephant came out of the forest again and returned to the village. He was really aggressive and clearly still in the signs of musth,” or mating behavior, she said.

“He smashed down six houses and was completely uncontrollable,” she said. “Police and a fire truck came to help, and were firing warning shots and trying to scare him back to the forest. But when he kept attacking the house one police officer fired on his leg to stop him.”

The elephant went down about 1 a.m. and died an hour later, she said...

Maybe let wild animals be wild? The wild ones don't suddenly come into the villages even if it's mating season.
