Re: The Tragic Data Behind Selfie Fatalities
Just when you think that selfie-takers can't get any stupider...
Snap! Selfie-seeking tourist bitten by Thai croc
2 January 2016, AFP.
A French tourist was bitten by a crocodile inside a Thai national park as she tried to get close to the fearsome animal to take a selfie, an official said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Khao Yai, a popular national park filled with dense jungle hiking trails and waterfalls three hours north of Bangkok.
"She wanted to take selfie with the crocodile who was lying down near a stream," a park official told AFP, asking not to be named because he did not have the authority to speak to the media. "It was startled and bit her on her on the leg."
The official said two crocodiles had made their home on that particular section of the park for years with warning signs laid out.
"I guess that she wanted to see it for real," he added.
Local media posted pictures of park rangers dressed in camouflage carrying the 47-year-old victim strapped to a stretcher, a thick bandage wrapped around her knee.
Another shot showed a ranger pointing to a pool of blood close to a sign saying in Thai and English "Danger Crocodile No Swimming".
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and is expected to recover...

Surprise. British backpacker, who had been posting selfies hanging out of a moving train, was found lying by the tracks after falling out of a moving train. Duh.

British backpacker in Thai hospital after falling from moving train
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/04 ... ing-train/A British tourist is in intensive care in a Thai hospital after falling out of a moving train.
Daniel Clarke, 20 from Aldershot, Hampshire, had been travelling from Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand.
Capt Ranong Chumpinit said Daniel Clarke was found at 01:05 GMT on Saturday lying by the train track in Thung-Kha, Chumphon province.
He told the BBC that Mr Clarke had stepped out to smoke between two carriages when he fell.
It was later disclosed that three days earlier Mr Clarke had posted a selfie of himself hanging out of a carriage window.
He was found unconscious by the tracks this morning wearing the same blue vest as when he took the picture.
It is not known how long Daniel had been on the train and where he boarded it before falling off.
He was noticed by a train driver this morning, who told local police and rescuers he believed Daniel had fallen from the train in front.
The friend pictured in the selfie with Daniel, Ross Wild, confirmed that he had now found Daniel but declined to comment further.
Meanwhile, doctors said that Daniel is being treated at the Chumphon Khet Udomsakdi Hospital.
Dr Sanchai Nakaphan said surgeons had operated on Daniel and scans showed he had not suffered brain damage.

Two runners, who tried to take selfie with a wild elephant in Khao Yai National Park in Nakhon Nayok province, had to sprint for their lives after it turned on them and chased them.
Their encounter was captured by a Facebook user, Kamron Petprayoon, who was taking photos of the male elephant after spotting him on a roadside leading to the national park.

Hanoi bans selfie-seeking tourists ahead of crackdown on railway cafes
October 11, 2019
Caroline Kwok
Hanoi authorities started banning tourists from a popular railway lined with bars and cafes on October 10, 2019, after a train had to make an emergency stop to avoid hitting visitors accused of taking too many risks in pursuit of “perfect selfies”.
Citing safety concerns, officials in the Vietnamese capital have set an October 12 deadline for the closure of dozens of cafes and shops that have gradually been built too close to the railway. .
