Goa murder: 245 tourists died in four local districts in past 12 years
Friday 17 March 2017

- An Irish-British dual national whom police believe was murdered in Goa was one of more than 245 foreigners to die in four districts of the Indian state in the past 12 years, according to police records obtained by the Guardian.

A postmortem on the body of Danielle McLaughlin has revealed the 28-year-old had been sexually assaulted and strangled in the hours after leaving a party on Monday at Palolem beach, a popular spot in the south of the state.
Police say they have arrested and will charge a local man they have identified as Vikat Bhagat with her rape and murder. Bhagat, described as a local gang member, was seen with McLaughlin on CCTV footage the day before her death.

Records from the Goa police, obtained under India’s freedom of information laws, show that six other foreigners’ deaths were classified as murders in the Anjuna, Pernem, Mapusa and Canacona districts in the decade leading to August 2015.

Another 157 foreigner deaths were classified as natural or accidental, but a group of relatives of some of the tourists who died in the western Indian state say authorities have overlooked crucial clues in some cases that could point to foul play.

The statistics reveal a darker picture of the coastal paradise that more than 5 million tourists visited in 2016. There were 20 suicides in Pernem district. About 23 people drowned, while the cause of death for another 39 people is listed as “not known or pending”. Foreign men aged between 30 and 49 are most at risk of dying in the districts, the records show.

The families of at least six foreigners who died while holidaying in Goa have told the Guardian they question initial rulings that the deaths of their loved ones were natural or accidental...

Latest Goa death was a brutal rape and murder. No drugs mentioned.
Report from PeepIndia:
Here is the case all about:

That 28-Year-Old Woman Irish Woman loved the place, as it was her second trip to Goa; since February. The woman was staying in Arambol and also popular among the peers.

She was on a backpacking trip. She even celebrated Holi before being raped, murdered and left unclothed with her face badly smashed up.

The woman had left with a two-holiday plan at Concona along with a local girl from North Goa. After they attended the holiday party plan, the next was to step towards their common friend’s place.

The next morning, she meets Vikas, the man she knew from the last trip to India. Unfortunately, the lady was unaware of her fate that came to her in a next way. As per the reports, the duo headed to the restaurant and pub hopping before heading towards North Goa. The two had stopped twice on their way to have a beer.

Vikas then took his friend to an isolated place at the end of the beach. And there, he assaulted her and left her after raping and killing.

Vikas smashed her face with a broken beer bottle so that her face couldn’t be identified. Moreover, he took all her belongings for its own purpose.

The farmers found the dead body of the victim and soon informed the police about it. The victim was found buried in her own blood...

Update.
Danielle McLaughlin: Goa murder trial begins
Image
The trial of a 24-year-old Indian man accused of raping and murdering an Irish woman in Goa has begun.

Danielle McLaughlin, from County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, was killed while on holiday in western Goa in March 2017.
Her body was discovered by another man in an isolated field, close to tourist resorts in Canacona.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of her death was brain damage and strangulation.

Vikhat Bhagat was arrested soon after her murder and CCTV footage allegedly showing he and Miss McLaughlin together is a key piece of evidence in the trial.

Re: Tourist deaths in Goa

When I first went to India for a few months in 1996, Goa was by far the dodgiest place I visited. There were dubious undercover cops roaming the beaches searching people, dreadlocked hippies wandering around naked smoking chillums, and big bunches of local male tourists who would walk holding hands/ shoulders and basically harass any woman around. They'd surround any western woman sunbathing and stand around perving on them or worse. There were also tales of tourists who had been led on walks along the cliffs and smashed over the head with rocks. I was in Bangalore just after a horrific incident there. It went something like this. A couple of dumb westerners were trying to buy drugs. The male pulled out a bag of money, he then got smacked over the head with a cudgel, which pretty much killed him. The woman was understandably freaked out, so went along with a rickshaw driver who said he's help her out. He drove her to the outskirts of town and raped her. When she managed to compose herself and get to a police station she was mocked as a loose woman, at that stage they hadn't found her partner's body but you get the picture....
Silence, exile, and cunning.
