Pattaya is more about nature than sex...

Our neighbors to the West... many of us have a love for Thailand and it's certainly got plenty to talk about, so lets talk about it here so that it doesn't overwhelm our regular Cambodia sections.

"Hard-hitting journalist" exposed as hitting it hard. Rebuttal of the UK tabloids article on Pattaya - funny.
The only thing that’s needed to debunk this fairy tale is to consider the source. The article credits three authors, but only one claims to have actually been to Pattaya, a Mr. Luke Williams. He is an Australian freelance journalist whose previous claim to fame was covering a story on meth addiction and becoming an addict himself. He then proceeded to milk his new found love of inhalable amphetamines by writing a book about what it’s like to be an ice-head in May of last year. In the book, Mr. Williams recounts a downward spiral where at the bottom he finds himself fantasizing he was a porn star and masturbating for 16 hours straight. It is not hard to imagine Mr. Williams gathering the information for his “Sex Capital” story while roaming the streets of Pattaya looking for a score of one kind or another.

And he is writing for a publication that openly solicits articles for money without any requirement for fact-checking or disclosure of sources. Methinks Mr. Williams may have financed a few good party nights in Pattaya with his mud-slinging comparison of Pattaya to Sodom and Gomorrah. (Journalist’s secret: Headlines containing any form of the word “Sodom” are guaranteed to go viral)

What’s more, Luke is a little Trump-like on the facts. He asserts that there are 27,000 sex workers in Pattaya but sites no source for such a ridiculous figure. He goes on to claim that 1 in 4 of the male population of Pattaya are big fat white guys looking for sex from young girls. Look Luke, I understand that when your body has been ravaged by meth, it must seem like everyone is a fat guy. And when your very soul is screaming for that next hit of Ice, one has a tendency to lose touch with reality. But a guy who was once an award winning journalist should know these kind of unsubstantiated absurdities just wipe out any shred of credibility you once had. Get yourself some help mate.

To be fair there is a lot of "bird" watching going on.
There is actually some pretty good bird (the feathered kind) watching around Pattaya as well a fair bit of nature. Obviously, 99.99% of the visitors to Pattaya will never see that.

PATTAYA, THAILAND (Reuters) – With mascots dressed as smiling fish and a police rock band, Thai authorities launched a “Happy Zone” at the weekend to improve the image of a city notorious for sex tourism.

Stung by foreign headlines portraying the seaside resort of Pattaya as “Sin City” and “The World’s Sex Capital,” Thailand’s junta has started a new effort to re-brand it.

“I want people to see that we are not like what they say. We are not allowing prostitution in these entertainment places,” provincial governor Pakkaratorn Teianchai told reporters on the infamous Walking Street in Pattaya, southeast of Bangkok.
Less than 10 meters away, women accosted foreign men to offer sex for 2,000 baht ($60). Others lined up with numbers so customers could take their pick...

The latest of many crackdowns in Pattaya happened after foreign newspaper reports last month, which drew an angry response from junta leader Prayuth Chan-o-cha, for whom bringing order is a mantra.

A handful of bars were raided. Bar owners and working women were fined. Scared to venture out, tourists looking for sex stayed in hotels. Street vendors and shops saw sales tumble. The money which flows to all levels in the city – including law enforcement agencies – fell off.

The Happy Zone approach is a softer way to try to show that something is being done. If it works on Walking Street, the idea will be spread to the less sanitized side streets – the sois.
“This is a pioneer project to organize a tourist destination and elevate it to promote Thailand’s quality tourism,” said Apichai Krobpetch, chief of Pattaya city police. “We will also stamp out prostitution in the area.”

There was no sign of that at the weekend...

...Sex tourism began in Pattaya when it became an R&R spot for U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War, though prostitution is just as evident in parts of Bangkok and other resorts.

The number of female sex workers in Thailand was put at over 120,000 in a 2014 UNAIDS report. Some estimates run to double that and not all the women who get paid for sex are full-time prostitutes.

Given a 305 baht ($8.80) a day minimum wage, the chance of earning several times more is an obvious lure, particularly in poorer rural regions.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
