ultimate frisbee; two Cambodian teams to compete in Bangkok this weekend
Over the past two years the ultimate has seen rapid growth (the Cambodian members now far outnumber the expat members) and this summer we've finally managed to get some traction with young women and girls (PP post article about that). Apart from it just being great that women are playing sports, it is also needed because all tournaments in the region are co-ed and usually require each team to field a certain number of women.
Anyway, this weekend will see the Mekong Cup. I am very excited; both teams will have fierce opposition, but I think they will do well!

Have been watching the development of frisbee as a sport in Cambodia. It's another one of those great team sports that hardly needs any equipment, so anyone can play it. I really like that. https://cambodiaexpatsonline.com/sports- ... t9573.html
Good luck Team Cambodia ! Let us know how they get on.

An unconventional sport finds an unlikely home in Cambodia
Fri, 3 March 2017
Andrew Nachemson
An expat-driven activity, ultimate Frisbee, has made surprising headway among the local population, giving young players the opportunity to travel and to challenge norms.
Three times every week, an eclectic mix of expats, locals and the occasional backpacker meet to participate in ultimate Frisbee – the unconventional but physically demanding sport that is gaining ground in Southeast Asia...
Yoeun is the captain of the Cambodian national team and a board member of the Cambodian Flying Disc Association, which was recently recognised by the sport’s international governing body.
“It’s been one of my biggest gateways to new experiences. I meet a lot of people, a lot of expats. Some are teachers, some work for NGOS. They all share their experiences and their stories with me,” Yoeun said as he watched his teammates play.
“I used to live in a slum. A group of American students came to our town to teach ultimate Frisbee and it completely changed my life,” he said, crediting the sport with teaching him English and inspiring him to improve his life...

Re: ultimate frisbee; two Cambodian teams to compete in Bangkok this weekend
Ultimate frisbee spreads its appeal beyond capital
The secretary of the Cambodian Flying Disc Association, Flo Zwiers, yesterday hailed the expansion of the fast-growing sport outside its Phnom Penh stronghold after the Kingdom’s ultimate frisbee organisation took two Kampot-based players to last weekend’s Zone Cup in Ho Chi Minh City.
Zwiers, a 30-year-old Dutchman, told The Post: “The sport is quickly expanding in Cambodia, as evidenced by the 15 new players from the Kingdom who joined the Zone Cup. We are especially pleased with our two debutants from Kampot province show that the sport is developing outside the capital too.”
While the two Cambodian teams, Phnom Penh-based Swa Ultimate and the composite Kruut Chkout team, struggled with the fierce competition in Vietnam, their rosters reflected a young and growing talent pool.
“I am proud of my team as half of the players had never played in an international tournament or even been abroad before,” said Sovannareach Yoeun, the captain of Swa Ultimate.
“Ultimate gives young people the opportunity to see the world,” he continued. “Some of our players only knew about Vietnam from the media, which doesn’t always portray the country in the best light. But now they got to meet and play against Vietnamese people and see what a great hosts they are.” ...

Frisbee Disc Golf comes to Siem Reap
SIEM Reap is becoming the freaky Frisbee centre of the Kingdom, thanks to the presence of two fine flying-disc fellows: Jared Cahners, the 2013-installed ‘prime minister’ of Cambodian Ultimate Frisbee, and Jacob Neff, a professional chimney sweep who once resided in Weed, USA and who recently launched Cambodia’s first Disc Golf Course or Frolf Course, aka Frisbee Golf Course aka Basket Disc Golf Course.
For the uninitiated, Disc Golf – which began in Canada in the early 1900s – is classified as a sport where players throw a disc, or Frisbee, at a target, usually a type of basket. The game, which follows rules similar to golf, is played in about 40 countries and there are about 120,000 members of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) globally.

Re: ultimate frisbee; two Cambodian teams to compete in Bangkok this weekend
Ultimate Frisbee is back in Siem Reap:
We are BACK! After a long hiatus we are ready for some disc throwing action at the new time of 6pm.
We will be celebrating the nice cool evenings and the defeat of the Corona with frisbee fun! Come have a throw of some flying discs. New sport, new friends, whole lotta fun.
No experience necessary! Really. No athletic ability necessary. It would be best if you had some type of athletic shoes, but if you don't, we can work around that.
Male/female/other/old/young/don't count years all invited.
We will follow all necessary safety protocols:
1) Beers after (kills any remaining virus or worries)
2) More beer
Gimme a shout if you have questions.
And please join the Siem Reap Ultimate Facebook group. That's where we will make announcements about weather cancellations.
