Bird flu outbreak: Hundreds of chickens, ducks culled.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

An outbreak of H5N1 bird flu which was declared last week in Svay Rieng province seems to have been contained. For the present it seems that no further cases have been declared after hundreds of birds were culled to stop contamination.
Culling poultry populations in areas of bird flu outbreak is a grim necessity, but when there is no financial compensation for poultry farms who declare a suspected outbreak, some farmers may think twice before contacting the authorities. As things stand, in the interest of public health it is the farmers who are paying the price of the fight against bird flu epidemics, sometimes losing their entire livelihood.

Hundreds of Poultry Culled in Svay Rieng After Bird Flu Outbreak
by Sek Odom | February 2, 2017

Hundreds of chickens and ducks infected with H5N1 bird flu have been culled in Svay Reing province after an outbreak of the virus last week, the first reported cases since November 2015.
Flocks of birds belonging to three farming families in Svay Chrum district’s Bassac commune have been destroyed by officials as part of efforts to contain the spread of the virus, said Thach Rotana, director of the provincial agriculture department.

Prompted by the sudden deaths of 68 birds, local authorities alerted Mr. Rotana’s office to a suspected outbreak on January 24.
“We brought three ducks to the Health Ministry for examination and found that it was a case of H5N1,” he said on Wednesday, adding that officials suspected wildlife from a nearby pond had infected the birds.
“We had to destroy more than 300 birds. Now we are observing to make sure it doesn’t spread to other villages or farms,” he said.

Villagers understood the need for the culling, but had asked for compensation, which the department could not provide, he added.
“We don’t have the budget,” Mr. Rotana said...

Officials investigating two avian flu outbreaks
Thu, 2 February 2017
Yesenia Amaro
The Ministry of Health is testing a suspected human avian flu case following an outbreak in poultry in Svay Rieng province, with experts also investigating a different avian virus – H7N3 – new to Cambodia and discovered in ducks last month in Kampong Thom province, officials said yesterday.

[ However,] Ly Sovann, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said yesterday that officials were also conducting a search for active human cases, and that one suspected case was being tested.
The last avian flu case in a human reported in the Kingdom was in 2014. As of last year, Cambodia had reported 42 avian influenza outbreaks among poultry, but just 56 human cases since 2004.

Meanwhile, Sovann said animal health officials were working with researchers at the Pasteur Institute to determine the cause of an outbreak of H7N3, an avian virus new to Cambodia that emerged in ducks in Kampong Thom last month.
Some 300 ducks were culled to prevent further spread of the virus, which has appeared in other countries, such as Mexico and Canada. “It’s not new in the world, but it’s new in Cambodia,” he said. “It’s a new case. We don’t know if it’s highly pathogenic.”

Sovann said that the ducks had been raised in a very isolated area in Trea village Kampong Thom’s Stoung district, and that the owners were cooperating.“We will continue to work with the Pasteur Institute to understand the case,” he said.

Vietnam on full alert as bird flu hits neighbors China, Cambodia

Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has called for elevated efforts from the administrations of border localities to prevent a cross-border spread of bird flu caused by avian influenza A(H7N9) and other viral strains to Vietnam.

The call came in an urgent dispatch amidst recent bird flu outbreaks reported in neighbors China and Cambodia, with deaths related to the poultry-borne virus estimated to be hundreds in the two countries...

All cross-border poultry transportation, sales and consumption between An Giang and Cambodia have been temporarily banned until further notice, according to Tran Tien Hiep, chief of the province’s Husbandry and Veterinary Branch.

Other Vietnamese provinces which share the border with Cambodia have also taken similar measures to monitor outbreak risks.

The Husbandry and Veterinary Branch of Kien Giang Province has set up three checkpoints on the National Routes 61, 63 and 80 to inspect any vehicle suspected of transporting infected poultry into Vietnam.
