Re: At Least 2 Foreigners Dead in Fatal Visa-Run Minivan Crash From Phuket, Thailand
Terrible statistics on accidents and road deaths concerning passenger transport vehicles in Thailand. Are minivans and buses more dangerous in Thailand than in Cambodia?
Taking a Tourist Van in Thailand a Scary Proposition
BANGKOK – Thailand’s public transport safety program of the Foundation for Consumers has relaesed scathing ststistics showing passenger vans rank as the #1 culprit of all public transport service road accidents, with a monthly average of 19.5 accidents resulting in a monthly average of 9.4 deaths.
The foundation, in cooperation with the Road Safety Centre, collected data of road accidents concerning public transport during January-November period this year and found out that that passenger vans were involved in 215 road accidents, averaging 19.5 accidents per month, resulting in 103 deaths and 1,102 injuries.
Reckless driving was blamed as the main cause of the accidents while the poor road worthiness from illegal modifications of the vans was blamed for the main cause of serious injuries and fatalities.
Regular tour buses on fixed routes were on second place after passenger vans with a total of 141 accidents, resulting in 56 deaths and 1,252 injuries.

Re: At Least 2 Foreigners Dead in Fatal Visa-Run Minivan Crash From Phuket, Thailand
Around 7% of minivans fail roadworthiness checks – 672 too dangerous to be on the road
The Land Transport department has announced the results of its promised checks on the roadworthiness of minivans.
Out of a total of 138,939 minivans checked some 9,422 were deemed to have failed some parts on the checklist. The department said many of these were minor and operators were ordered to make immediate repairs or find replacements parts.
Earlier it was announced that the checklist would look at tires, doors, escape hammers and extinguishers among about twenty items.
Some 672 vans were found to be dangerous and unfit for service. These were ordered out of service immediately with requirements that the vehicles be changed for new ones.
Some 265 drivers were not up to scratch. Of these 25 were banned from driving in the future. Of the remaining 240 many had no license or a license of the wrong kind. These were fined and ordered to update their documents but were not disqualified...
