Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Now the suspect has been apprehended, details of the motive for the murders have been revealed. It was not robbery, as it was first recounted by the surviving victim, but is related to recruitment for the online sales company, b:HIP.
Image
The victims persuaded the suspect to come to Siem Reap and work as a sales person for b:HIP online sales company, telling him he would make a lot of money, up to $1000 a month in commission.
The victims, who were all working for b:HIP, were probably not making much money at their sales job, so they attempted to recruit Chea (and probably others) on Facebook in order to earn a recruitment bonus.
When Chea found out that in order to join b:HIP he was expected to pay $1300, he was angry with the victims because he thought they tried to scam him, and they were wasting his time because he had no money. [It seems the suspect may have traveled from his home in Kampong Chnang to Siem Reap, believing he had a good job waiting.]
The reports differ over whether Chea confronted the victims and killed them in anger, or whether he waited until they were sleeping before cutting their throats.

The b:HIP bonus system:

While the company concerned is in no way responsible for this crime, it does seem a questionable practice to employ poor Cambodians to sell expensive "health products" in a country where the market is small to non-existent; consumers with this sort of money can buy products directly from the internet.
The price of the b:HIP products that the Cambodian salespeople are expected to sell starts at $50.

Of course! All these "business" models work on praying on the poor and uneducated. I had quite a few meetings with my ex-staff explaining that these are actually very immoral pyramid schemes. And I do blame these companies for all the bad that comes out of it.

Nah, fuck that. Mr Chea Sokchin is responsible for bludgeoning those people to death.

Sure, Herbalife and their ilk are scummy companies, but cannot be blamed for emotionally unstable homicidal redneck fuckheads from K.Chanang getting stabby because they felt hard done by.

I stand with you Jerry.

Being a victim of a con should not culminate in murder.
Pissed off? Fuk Yeah. Ass whippin? Most likely.
Suk it up & move on.

That young lad is about to become victim to an even greater pyramid scheme.
