A Moral Outrage

If you have something so weird, strange or off-topic to post and think it doesn't belong in any other forum; you're probably right. Please put all your gormless, half-baked, inane, glaikit ideas in here. This might also be a place where we throw threads that appear elsewhere that don't belong ANYWHERE end up, instead of having to flush them. FORUM RULES STILL APPLY.

A Moral Outrage

Post by Kuroneko »

Seeing that nothing has happened in this section for 5 days I thought I'd stir things up a bit :D

Just came across this article on this website - Khmer Mentality Observations about Khmer Culture, Mentality and Society.

A moral outrage by Danny Chan

"As an immigrant born in predominantly Buddhist Cambodia and raised in Judaeo-Christian America, I am disgusted by the pervasiveness of prostitution in Cambodia."

"Moreover, there is an ugly racial component to the Cambodian sex trade because it attracts foreigners who patronize Khmer prostitutes as a form of sexual conquest. This is common among misguided Western neocolonialists who travel to places like Thailand and Cambodia to have sex with young women and children as a way of asserting their masculinity and white superiority."

I think it's asinine enough :D

You should read some of his other gems. He sounds like someone with a few issues.

He's even got a forum. Well worth the read if you can spare 2 minutes: >> http://www.khmermentality.com/p/forum.html

Selective outrage. He seems to have a thing for British "professionals" :whip2: And, morally, that doesn't seem to pose a problem ;)

The problem with this guys argument is that the premise on which it's based is all in his head and bears no relation to the situation "on the ground" in Cambodia.

"I think Western men are better off patronizing prostitutes in their own countries" Really, I think you are making the mistake of conflating different cultural concepts of prostitution here!

"Moreover, Western men will not be troubled by the language barrier in dealing with the skanky "me-love-you-long-time" Asian hoe-ziz." Not much empathy with your less than fortunate Khmer sisters here!

"Besides, most prostitutes in impoverished Cambodia are themselves victims of sex slavery in one form or another--" Debatable, while not denying that so called "sex slavery exists" The hostesses and bar girls frequented by western foreigners are generally not among that category.

"Best of all, you won't have to feel guilty about exploiting an impoverished third-world country because no woman in an affluent Western country needs to sell her body to survive." Obviously you have not spent any time in western health and community services then.

This must have been a typo, because it makes no sense:
Most Khmer folks seem to be okay with prostitution as long as it's their own daughters or sisters who are selling their bodies.

In truth the prostitutes might as well have been their own daughters and sisters because the ubiquity of prostitution in Cambodia degrades the entire nation.
Way too much emphasis on foreigners, while completely ignoring the larger issue. Strange how this person seems to be deluded into thinking that prostitution in the UK (which is singled out) is just a cushy job for affluent locals. No mention of the Eastern Europeans, Thais, etc who are trafficked around by gangsters. The obsession with Brits was weird, like the US is squeaky clean and its citizens always behave so well?
Best of all, you won't have to feel guilty about exploiting an impoverished third-world country because no woman in an affluent Western country needs to sell her body to survive. They have many other choices in life but choose to become escorts because it allows them to easily make a lot of money in a very short period of time.

Has this bloke not seen the hundreds upon hundreds of KTVs with attached hotels full of young Cambodian women servicing, almost exclusively, Khmer men with fancy state issued number plates.

Nobody sees those anymore. The street I work on must have about 50 of them along it.

Can't argue with that either. Playboy and RobW seem to be the terrors of the town.

Well, they sort of are. I wouldn't be surprised if you have had a quick one in the bog before now. :stir:

Well, if you extend slavery to family debt, there maybe a point there, Aren't most third world prostitutes poor farm girls, been sent through filial piety to make money for the family in the city? But, I would probably class it as economic slavery, as some families are suffering from debt crisis where their home or land is on the line. There are a few reasons why they become prostitutes though.

I remember a UK study thats conclusion was female sex workers in Britain are among the most satisfied workers in a poll of British worker satisfaction.
