After more than more than 100 court appearances over three years, British businessman Gregg Fryett and three of his business associates were handed five- to eight-year prison sentences on Wednesday at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

Mr. Fryett received an eight-year sentence and a fine of 10 million riel, or about $2,500, Mr. Sam Ang received a seven-year sentence and a 10 million riel fine, while Mr. Denny and Mr. Ratanak both received five-year sentences and fines of five million riel, or about $1,250.

The following article has a look at the difference in the conditions of detention for foreigner Gregg Fryett, and the three others, two Khmer-Americans and a Cambodian national, who were arrested with Fryett for document falsification and illegal land clearing.

Four men are facing more time in prison after being convicted in a yearslong fraud case, but their lives behind bars could hardly be more different.

On December 29, Mr. Fryett, 49, who was head of International Green Energy (IGE), was handed an eight-year prison sentence, Mr. Sam Ang, 58, the firm’s country manager, received seven years, and Mr. Denny, 47, and Mr. Ratanak—lower-level IGE employees—both received five-year sentences.

While they all claim to be victims of a broken court system, the men are living in alternate universes...
