Floods kill 8, leave 4 missing in central Vietnam
Published December 16, 2016 Associated Press

HANOI, Vietnam – Floods from torrential rains have killed eight people and left four others missing in central Vietnam with more downpours forecast in the region.

A local disaster official in the worst-hit province of Binh Dinh said Friday that six people were killed there and authorities are searching for four reported missing.

The government says in a report that floods since December 12 have killed one each in the provinces of Khanh Hoa and Thua Thien Hue. The floods damaged the region's infrastructure, agriculture and livestock.

The report says a cold spell from the north is expected to extend heavy rains until Saturday.

Central Vietnam is one of the country's poorest areas, and has suffered three bouts of flooding since October, killing more than 60 people.

HANOI - Days of unseasonably torrential rains have killed at least 24 people in central Vietnam, authorities said on Monday, inundating swathes of the region including the tourist draw town of Hoi An.

Vietnam regularly experiences tropical storms and heavy downpours but it is unusual for the country to see so much rain in December, during the cooler dry season that is popular with tourists.

Coastal Binh Dinh province reported the biggest death toll with 16 people killed since heavy rains began on December 12, according to an official online report from the national flood and storm control committee.

More severe flooding in North and Central Vietnam, and more heavy rains forecast this week.

Floods and landslides kill 37, leave 40 missing in Vietnam
12th October, 2017
Hanoi - Floods and landslides after a tropical depression have killed at least 37 people, left another 40 missing and damaged homes and crops in northern and central Vietnam, officials said. The tropical depression hit central Vietnam on Tuesday and brought heavy rains.

More rains are forecast for some parts of northern and central regions on Thursday as a cold spell is moving from southern China to Vietnam, the disaster agency said. Also, adding another tropical depression was expected to hit the Philippines on Thursday evening and could strengthen to a tropical storm when it moves to the South China Sea.

Agriculture Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong was quoted as telling a government emergency meeting on Wednesday that it was the first time in a decade that northern and central regions suffered such a big volume of rains in a short period of time.
Rains of up to 50cm were reported over the three-day period until Wednesday in some parts of central and northern regions.

A tropical storm forming in the East Sea has been forecast to hit China’s Hainan Island before moving to northern and central Vietnam next Monday, threatening to wreak more havoc in a region already in the throes of devastating floods that have killed at least 54 people.

The tropical storm is the 11th to form this year in the East Sea, known internationally as the South China Sea.
According to forecasts, the storm will hit provinces in northern and north-central Vietnam that are still trying to deal with one of the deadliest floods to ever hit the country.

Talked to our GM there yesterday. Water has receded a lot, leaving huge piles of garbage everywhere.
