Ancient Statue Found in Kampong Speu
Friday, 16 December 2016
Farmers excavating a rice field stumbled upon a centuries-old statue yesterday in Kampong Speu province’s Kandal village Monday afternoon. Samraong Torng district police officer Ros Voeun said the farmers were digging in a rice field when their excavator uncovered the ancient statue.
“They had the excavator dig their rice field and accidentally found the statue,” he said, adding that the farmers reported the find to the Kampong Speu provincial department of culture and asked them to handle it.
According to local media, the figure, which is missing its arms and legs, is a 1,000-year-old Buddhist Avalokiteshvara statue.
The department of culture confirmed that it received the statue on Monday and sent it to the National Museum for preservation on Tuesday...

Amazing what they were able to sculpture that long ago. I love archeology. It awakes my curiosity and would make me try to draw conclusions at historical sites. One of very few activities I would actually volunteer for. I have never found anything meaningful sadly. There is always tomorrow.

Khmer Times have stolen that photo from Rasmei Kampuchea. http://www.rasmeinews.com/local/ODNmZDIyMG/18
Rasmei's article with the exact same image appeared on Tuesday 13th, KT's article was published today, the 16th.
KT could have of course paid royalties on the image, but with their corporate culture it's unlikely.
Actually it might be common practice for them. Looking through their Twitter image feed I swear I recognise many of their 'local' story images from this week having been used in local media websites or newspapers from earlier in the week. I know Phnom Penh Post police blotter used to credit local stories to the newspaper they originally appeared in...KT I think (not sure as it's literally the only Cambodian news website I don't look at) have a 'local' news section...Do they credit the original source, journalist or photographer?
Seems likely they are just translating / rewriting articles and downloading images and then publishing the finished article without crediting (or paying royalties) to the source.

People have been able to sculpture for thousands of years, not exactly surprising. I'm just glad they didn't try to sell it off, but reported it to the authorities instead.OKW wrote:Amazing what they were able to sculpture that long ago. I love archeology. Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
