New rules for Chiang Mai's lantern festival - Nov 13-15.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

New rules for Chiang Mai's lantern festival - Nov 13-15.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

An extensive set of rules concerning hot air lanterns has been announced by the authorities. A maximum penalty of 3 years in jail for those who flout the rules:

CHIANG MAI - Restrictions have been imposed on the release of all kinds of lanterns during this year's Yi Peng Festival to be held on Nov 13-15 in this northern province.
Provincial governor Pawin Chamniprasart announced the restrictions, which he said were in the interests of public and aviation safety...

On the night of Nov 14, Loy Krathong night, hot air lanterns can be released from 7pm to 1am the following day. They can also be released on Nov 15 from 7pm to 1am.
The restrictions will also apply to the night of Dec 31, New Year's eve.

The announcement said the lanterns must be made from natural materials. The maximum size should not exceed one cubic metre, with the diameter not exceeding 90 centimetres, and should be no more than 140cm high. A lantern should contain no more than 55 grammes of fuel, made with paper coated with wax or paraffin, capable of burning no longer than eight minutes.

Under the announcement, people who want to float lanterns into the sky are required to first obtain permission from the local district chief.

People found releasing lanterns outside the given time and permitted areas are liable to a maximum penalty of three years in jail and/or a fine of 60,000 baht.

Sales of all kinds of lanterns in temples or public places are also prohibited without the permission of the district chief.

Betting on lanterns is also banned.

time of flight or distance maybe? might be fun.

I've often thought this activity to be a wee bit dangerous. it's hard to believe that more fires aren't started with these things.
they often head back over land even though they are set off at the edge of water.
also one heck of a littering activity, but here, what does that mean....

what I can't figure, is why they put the rules on?

cheers

Bolueeleh, you need lessons on how to gamble ? :plus1:

You've never bet on two ants climbing up a wall ? Same principle.
First past the post - first lantern to disappear, first to explode, first to set a building alight etc, the possibilities are only restricted by your imagination. ;)

Thailand cancels, adjusts flights ahead of lantern festival
ReutersNovember 11, 2016

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Dozens of flights to northern Thailand will be canceled or rescheduled when the country celebrates its annual Floating Lantern festival next week, airport officials said on Friday.

Chiang Mai International Airport, the main airport in northern Thailand - a destination popular with foreign tourists - said some flights would be canceled between Nov. 12 and Nov. 16. as floating lanterns released during the festival could affect safety.

The Floating Lantern festival is celebrated at the end of the so-called "rainy season" when paper lanterns are launched into the air to coincide with a full moon.

In recent years, authorities have asked revelers to refrain from launching the lanterns because they pose a fire risk. In 2015, a Bangkok Airways flight was canceled after a lantern was sucked into the plane's engine...
