South Korea - On the brink of collapse

The essence of the scandal is this: It has emerged that Park, notoriously aloof even to her top aides, has been taking private counsel from Choi Soon-sil, a woman she’s known for four decades. Despite having no official position and no security clearance, Choi seems to have advised Park on everything from her wardrobe to speeches about the dream of reunification with North Korea.

Calls for her resignation — and even impeachment — are resonating from across the political spectrum, and her approval ratings have dropped to a record low of 17 percent, according to two polls released Friday.

On Friday, Park directed all of her top advisers to resign en masse, with her spokesman saying a reshuffle would take place, the Yonhap news agency reported. Kim Jae-won, senior presidential secretary for political affairs, told a parliamentary session that Park’s chief of staff had already stepped down.

Falling like a house of cards.

Remember the Reagan years?

* I have signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. Bombing begins in five minutes * (This was testing a microphone, unaware that he was being recorded.)

... and much, much more.

But later we learned, with gratitude and relief, that American foreign policy had been in the safe hands of Nancy*s fortune-teller (Joan Quigley) all along.

South Korea's political soap opera continues with further arrests :

SEOUL: South Korean prosecutors arrested two former top presidential aides on Sunday in a snowballing influence-peddling scandal which has seen tens of thousands of people take to the streets to demand President Park Geun-hye resign.

Park's approval ratings have hit a historic low of five per cent - a record for a sitting president - over the scandal involving her close friend Choi Soon-sil.

Choi has been arrested for fraud and also stands accused of meddling in state affairs - including government appointments and policy decisions - despite holding no official position.

Ahn Jong-beom, a former senior advisor to Park, was formally arrested early Sunday on charges of abuse of power and attempted coercion, the Yonhap news agency reported.

Prosecutors also arrested Jeong Ho-Seong, another former presidential aide, over allegations that he leaked classified information...

Protesters continue to take to the streets to demand the resignation of the South Korean president:
SEOUL: South Koreans are expected to take to the streets once again on Saturday (Nov 26) to protest against embattled President Park Geun-hye. Organisers have said they expect about two million people in total to hold rallies in the capital Seoul, as well as in other cities in the country.

This will be the fifth straight weekend of demonstrations against the president. The rallies have been peaceful so far, and the same is expected on Saturday, although some protesters said they would aim to get as close as they could to the presidential Blue House so that President Park could hear them chanting for her resignation.

Organisers of the rally said they planned to form a human chain around the Blue House by getting people to hold hands around it. Around 1,000 farmers (with their tractors) were also planning to take part.

If President Park does not resign after the rallies, Koreans said they would take further action. College students said they would boycott classes, while the militant Korean Confederation of Trade Unions said their members would take part in a partial strike on Nov 30 to demand her resignation...

South Korea parliament impeaches scandal hit president
Posted 09 Dec 2016 14:44

SEOUL: South Korean lawmakers on Friday (Dec 9) voted to impeach President Park Geun-Hye, stripping away her sweeping executive powers over a corruption scandal and opening a new period of national uncertainty.

The National Assembly ballot immediately transferred Park's authority to the prime minister, pending a decision by the Constitutional Court on whether to ratify the decision and permanently remove the president from office.

A ruling could take up to six months, during which time Park will remain in the presidential Blue House - a leader in name only.

The situation leaves South Korea facing an extended stretch of political anxiety and policy paralysis at a time of slowing economic growth, rising unemployment and elevated military tensions with nuclear-armed North Korea...

Is this the first leader in Asia to be removed from office for corruption, or rather, "influence-peddling" ?

South Korea court removes President Park from office over scandal
Posted 10 Mar 2017 11:05

SEOUL: South Korea's Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye on Friday, removing her from office over a graft scandal involving big business that has gripped the country for months.

Park becomes South Korea's first democratically elected leader to be forced from office. A presidential election will be held in 60 days, according to the constitution.

"We remove Park Geun-hye from office," Lee Jung-mi, acting president of the court, told the hearing. "Her actions betrayed the people's confidence. They are a grave violation of law which cannot be tolerated."

The ruling to uphold parliament's Dec. 9 vote to impeach Park over an influence-peddling scandal is the most dramatic twist in a political crisis that has gripped the country for months...
