Warning Danger - Galaxy 7 phones on aircraft ? Ask what to do.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

If you are carrying a Galaxy 7 on board an aircraft, for the moment you had better ask about the procedure to follow :

Fears among airlines about smartphone fires grows - but advice from regulators proves inconsistent

There have been dozens of incidents in which the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones have caught fire

Airlines flying to and from Britain are stepping up precautions to avoid an inflight fire starting with a smartphone.

Following dozens of incidents in which the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones have caught fire, the manufacturer has launched a recall - citing “a battery cell issue”.

Any owners whose devices are regarded as risky will have their smartphone replaced. But pilots are concerned that passengers on flights to, from and within the UK may be unwittingly carrying dangerous devices. The recall only began on 19 September.

Passengers on flights on Thomas Cook Airlines and Norwegian have told The Independent that pilots made PA announcements asking for anyone carrying such a device to alert the crew. The Independent understands the protocol is for passengers to be asked not to switch on the smartphone on board, nor to charge it even if it is switched off.

But aviation safety experts are concerned that regulators and airlines are giving conflicting advice and instructions to passengers.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the leading safety regulator, says it “strongly advises passengers not to turn on or charge these devices on board aircraft and not to stow them in any checked baggage”.

Yet in an apparent contradictory statement, the FAA also says: “If a product that is a hazardous material or that contains a hazardous material component (e.g., battery) is subject to a safety recall related to the hazardous material, it must not be carried aboard an aircraft or in baggage unless the recalled product/component has been replaced or repaired or otherwise made safe.” That appears at odds with the statement allowing the Samsung smartphone on board subject to conditions.

Another Washington DC agency, the Department of Transportation has issued new rules for anyone flying to and from the US. British Airways is telling such passengers: “If you own a Samsung Galaxy Note 7, you must not turn your phone on or connect it to any power source during your journey. If your bag is checked in at the gate, please remove your Galaxy Note 7, and place it in your hand baggage.”

A similar policy is being followed by easyJet on European flights. The airline says: “Customers travelling with a Galaxy Note 7 mobile phone will need to ensure it remains switched off during their flight and to be carried in their hand luggage.“

Smoking Samsung phone sparks alert on Singapore-India flight
Posted 23 Sep 2016 21:34 Updated 24 Sep 2016 00:28

NEW DELHI: A smoking Samsung phone sparked alarm on a flight from Singapore to India on Friday (Sep 23), weeks after the manufacturer recalled 2.5 million units of its latest model when batteries began catching fire while charging.

Airline IndiGo said it had dealt with an incident involving "minor smoke" coming from a Samsung Note 2 device in a passenger's hand luggage on a flight from Singapore to the southern Indian city of Chennai.

The phone was not the same model as that involved in the recall.

"IndiGo confirms that a few passengers travelling on 6E-054 from Singapore to Chennai noticed the smoke smell in the cabin this morning and immediately alerted the cabin crew on board," the airline said in a statement.

"(The crew) observed smoke being emitted from Samsung Note 2 which was placed in the baggage (of a passenger) in overhead bin."

Crew used a fire extinguisher before submerging the phone in water and the plane made a normal landing.

Even the replacements are exploding...

CHICAGO – A Southwest Airlines flight leaving Louisville, Kentucky was evacuated after a passenger’s Samsung phone began emitting smoke.
Flight 994 was evacuated on the runway prior to takeoff after a passenger’s Samsung Galaxy Note 7 — described as a replacement in Samsung’s global recall of the device — apparently caught fire, the airline said.

“All customers and crew deplaned calmly and safely via the main cabin door,” it said in a written statement.

There is an ongoing global recall of the South Korean phone-maker’s “phablet” due to explosions caused by faulty batteries. The company suspended sales of the oversized device and recalled 2.5 million units worldwide last month.

Some 60 percent of US consumers had swapped their devices for replacements by the end of last month.

Brian Green — whom US media identified as the man whose phone caused the evacuation of the Southwest flight — told ABC News that his device was a replacement...

I was on a Etihad Airways flight last month and they actually announced this:

"Please put your smartphone in flight mode, and if it's a Samsung Note 7, please turn it off and do not turn it back on or attempt to charge it until you are off the plane."

Was strange to hear them single out a specific model, but fair enough.
"Life is too important to take seriously."

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."
