15 monks fall sick after chewing gum, drinking energy drinks.

In a most unusual case of possible food poisoning, 15 young monks fell ill after being given gum and energy drinks. Only the monks who chewed the gum fell sick.

Monks Sick From Gum, Energy Drink

Fifteen Buddhist monks and one assistant at a pagoda in Banteay Meanchey province’s Preah Netr Preah district fell ill yesterday after drinking M150 energy drinks and eating gum on Tuesday night, police said yesterday.

Kroch Hak, the Phnom Leap commune police chief, said 15 of the 36 monks living in Srah Chhouk Botom pagoda fell ill after eating food given to them by the chief monk.

“On Tuesday at about 5pm, villagers offered drinks to the 27 monks and one assistant. After drinking the energy drink, they left the room, but the chief monk called to meet them in his room and gave them candy called ‘Cool Air and Doublemint’, but only 15 monks ate it,” he said.

Mr. Hak said the monks returned to their rooms, but after 30 minutes, many began to vomit, feel weak and have stomachaches. Local residents were called when it became apparent that the problem was widespread.

“When we arrived, we checked all of the rooms of the monks and called them out to know how many were sick and how many were healthy.

We then sent them to the referral hospital for help,” he said...

Pesticide Found In M-150 Energy Drink - This was 10 years ago!

PUBLIC HEALTH MINISTRY CHECKING ALL ENERGY DRINKS AFTER PESTICIDE WAS FOUND IN M-150

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Public Health is checking on all types of energy drinks after pesticide was found in the M-150 drink.

Deputy Public Health Minister Anuthin Charnweerakul (อนุทิน ชาญวีรกุล) said he has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to examine all energy drinks in the market, after M-150 was found contaminated with pesticide.

Mr Anuthin said any product found to be contaminated would be immediately removed from shelves. In addition to pesticides, checks would also be made to determine if there is any antibiotics contamination in the drinks.

everything else aside....why would they chose 'anitbiotics' to check also? what would suggest that there might be a 'pesticide+antibiotic' combination?
what could possibly be that thought process?

curious

Bertros :hattip:
Contamination of food with antibiotics is a general public health concern.

"But Consumers Union has concluded that the threat to public health from the overuse of antibiotics in food animals is real and growing. Humans are at risk both due to potential presence of superbugs in meat and poultry, and to the general migration of superbugs into the environment, where they can transmit their genetic immunity to antibiotics to other bacteria, including bacteria that make people sick.

Numerous health organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Public Health Association, Infectious Disease Society of America, and the World Health Organization, agree and have called for significant reductions in the use of antibiotics for animal food production." http://consumersunion.org/news/the-over ... -health-2/

perhaps, in general, but not specifically on purpose as a poison I would think....

do they (and you) think that the folks who put the pesticide in the drink also went down to the local pharmacy to buy antibiotics to pollute the drinks?
certainly there are many more nefarious things to include than 'antibiotic's.....

just sayin', it's a bit of an odd choice to impart deleterious affects.

cheers

The PPP article puts the blame squarely on the energy drink. Strange consumption for monks to be sure.

Hospital for monks after energy drink
Thu, 22 September 2016

Half a dozen monks remained hospitalised in Banteay Meanchey yesterday after falling ill on Tuesday following an energy drink-fuelled snacking session.

At about 9pm on Tuesday, a group of 15 monks and one student in a pagoda in Preah Netr Preah district’s Phnom Leap commune began to experience severe headaches, said commune chief Chuoy Keangthoung.

“They drank the [Thai energy drink] M-150 and chewed gum,” he said, adding that some had a minty candy instead of gum.

While the commune chief offered up the full litany of snacks, his district counterpart, Ly Sovanarith, pointed out that one of those who fell ill had only had the energy drink.

Sovanarith said that as of yesterday evening, nine monks and the boy had recovered while six were still receiving treatment at the district referral hospital. Two of the six hospitalised had recovered, but went back to hospital after becoming sick again.

“One monk fainted when he was admitted to the district hospital,” he said, adding that doctors couldn’t conclude what caused the sickness and that the products weren’t expired.
