A commune police officer was arrested on Saturday evening over allegations that he shot and killed a man after an argument earlier that day in Kratie province’s Prek Prasob district, according to the district police chief.

Major Chan Sophalla, chief of Prek Prasob district police, said the suspect was Huon Hy, a 35-year-old male penal police officer working with the Chroy Banteay commune police. He added that the victim was 32-year-old Oum Sina, a known drug addict from Chroy Banteay commune’s Laiet village...

Captain Heng Hoeun, chief of Chroy Banteay commune police, said Mr. Hy was arrested late on Saturday evening after shooting Mr. Sina dead.

“He was accused over the allegation of murder,” he told Khmer Times by telephone yesterday.

“He is still being detained for questioning at provincial police headquarters. He will be sent to the provincial court for questioning this Monday [today],” he added.

According to the Penal Code, if found guilty he will be punished with between 10 and 15 years’ imprisonment.
