Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. In the case of this acid attack, the first wife is clearly not ok to share her husband with a second wife. And there are very many cases of assault and even murder from jealousy between spouses in Cambodian news.

When you say "so many men have multiple wives" - where do you get this from ? Where in Cambodia is this "really common" ?

I'm skeptical that this is "common", mostly because I don't personally know any Cambodian households where multiple wives are living together in harmony ... but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, and I have an open mind so tell me more.
I lead a sheltered life, but I'm always ready to learn.

"I don't personally know any Cambodian households where multiple wives are living together in harmony .'

It's highly unlikely you will, such a "hippie" communal love arrangement is taboo in Khmer culture. The second wife must maintain (or be maintained in) her own residence. I don't know any Cham well enough to ask them if they the practice it and if so do they do they honor the Cambodian practice or do they have their own.

"just curious if they have a word(s) for it."

Indeed they do. For starters there is the highly unimaginative prapuon tii pii (the second wife) and prapuon chong(top) Which is considered slightly pejorative.

Sreyla, a garment worker at a small handicraft manufacturer, was collecting her paycheck when she was allegedly set upon by Vuthy’s wife, Chhum Savun, 34, along with Savun’s mother, Huy Van, 66, and siblings, Chhum Savarng, 37, and Chhum Sarvuth, 28.

“Now I cannot see, and the doctor told me that if I still cannot see in two weeks, I will be blind forever,” Sreyla said through tears.

Returning to her Ralaing Kroeul commune home for police interviews, Sreyla said she was seeking justice. She is three months pregnant with Vuthy’s child.
“I know that I love her husband, but I have never wanted them to get divorced. I told the suspect that I am willing to be the second wife,” she said.

The news comes in the week after another acid attack in which a young couple was targeted by the man’s former girlfriend, a familiar pattern in such attacks, where the perpetrator targets the face to permanently disfigure a woman embroiled in perceived infidelity.
Only three acid attacks were reported by the Post in all of last year, with four in 2015.

UPDATE:
Alleged Acid Attackers Released Without Trial
by Buth Kimsay | February 23, 2017

Three family members charged in connection with an acid attack on a woman last month were released from custody by the Kompong Speu Provincial Court after the victim withdrew her complaint, a court official said on Wednesday.

Seng Sreyla, 27, sustained burns to her face after being doused with battery acid on January 10.

The alleged initiator of the attack, Chhom Savon, 34, remained at large, but her sister was charged with intentional acts of violence and her brother and mother were charged as accomplices.

The three faced two to five years in prison.

Ms. Sreyla, who could not be reached, was reportedly romantically involved with Ms. Savon’s husband.

Deputy prosecutor Keo Sothea said the court decided to release the suspects after Ms. Sreyla withdrew her complaint.

“The acid was not a strong kind of acid. It caused no marks and it was just like hot water,” he said.

Som Sak, chief of the provincial police’s serious crimes bureau, said he was left wondering why they had been let go.
“It seemed very strange. They had just been arrested about a month ago.”
