In reality it is a lemon that is inserted into the mouth as a gag.

"According to the official Police Review (Công An), condemned criminals were taken before dawn to a desolate site, read the
court’s verdict, offered a bowl of noodle soup and a cigarette, and allowed to write a last letter home. Then they were tied to a wooden pole, gagged with a lemon and blindfolded, and shot by five police men. The commander then fired a last “humane shot” into the convict’s ear." Child Torturer Won’t Be Extradited, Mother Says
February 22, 2017
Despite initial hopes that the man who tortured her 2-year-old son last year would face trial in Cambodia, the child’s mother said on Tuesday that Vietnamese police have informed her that the abuser would not be extradited from Vietnam.

Nguyen Thanh Dung, a Vietnamese national, was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City in December after graphic videos were leaked online showing him repeatedly torturing the Cambodian boy, at one point blindfolding him and using a taser on various parts of his body.

Vietnamese police discussed Mr. Nguyen’s prosecution during a four-hour interview on Monday at the Phnom Penh office of the Child Protection Unit (CPU), a policing charity that has been involved in the investigation, the mother said.

Mr. Nguyen, 34, was charged by a Vietnamese court in December with “violence on other,” which carries a three-year prison sentence, said So Sovann, deputy police chief of Mondolkiri province, where the abuse allegedly took place. Mr. Nguyen has been jailed since his arrest.
If he were returned to Cambodia, he likely would be charged with aggravated torture and acts of cruelty, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years...

The plantation owner, Dutchman Stefan Struik, who was Mr. Nguyen’s boyfriend, was arrested and charged in December for allegedly concealing evidence and failing to report the abuse. Mr. Struik is being provisionally detained in the Mondolkiri Provincial Prison.

Case Against Dutchman Over Boy’s Torture to Move to Trial
22 April 2017
The case against a Dutch national accused of helping his Vietnamese boyfriend flee the country after videos emerged of the boyfriend torturing a 2-year-old Cambodian boy has been sent to a presiding judge to set a trial date.

Stefan Struik, 53, was arrested in December for assisting his partner, Nguyen Thanh Dung, 34, to cross the border into Vietnam after video footage posted to Facebook showed Mr. Nguyen torturing a small boy, including shocking the child’s genitals with an electric prod. Police later established the video had been shot on a cacao plantation owned by Mr. Struik in Mondolkiri province, where the boy’s parents lived and worked.

Investigating Judge Ya Narin charged Mr. Struik with omission to file a complaint against the mistreatment of a minor and concealment of evidence. Both charges carry sentences of between one and three years in prison and a fine of up to 6 million riel, or about $1,500.

On Thursday, Mondolkiri Provincial Court spokesman Meas Pros said the investigation into Mr. Struik’s case had finished before Khmer New Year and been sent to Presiding Judge Sun Pisith. The judge confirmed he had received the case and was reviewing the file, but had not yet set a date for the trial to begin...

Trial Date Set for Boyfriend of Toddler Torturer
May 24, 2017
An initial trial date has been set for a Dutchman charged with crimes including concealing evidence after his Vietnamese boyfriend was seen torturing a boy in videos that emerged last year.
Mondolkiri Provincial Court clerk Lay Lycheng said yesterday that a date of June 6 had been set for Mr. Struik’s trial.
Mr. Struik faces charges of “omission to file a complaint against the mistreatment of a minor” and “concealment of evidence,” which together carry a sentence of between one and three years in prison and fines of up to 6 million riel, or about $1,500.

" The trial of a Dutch man charged with concealing evidence after his Vietnamese boyfriend was seen torturing a toddler in a series of videos was postponed within an hour of its commencement on Tuesday after the court determined that an insufficient number of judges had been assigned to the case."
