Is Thailand Causing Tourism in Cambodia to Decline?

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

This tax is included in the airline ticket prices now, and has been for several years, so it doesn't even factor into putting tourists off.
it's a factor anyway when you see the final price of your ticket ... try booking a flight from BKK to PP for instance and it will cost you like going to Singapore or HK ... no matter if they try to hide the 25$ tax.

in plus you'll need the 25$ visa on arrival unless you've already a multi entry visa.

for the many tourists that just want to do 3-4 days in Siem Reap to see Angkor it can make a big difference :

- 50$ airport tax (25$ go, 25$ go back)
- 25$ visa on arrival
- 30$ angkor wat entrance fee
- 5-7$ for tuktuk to/from airport or 10$ for taxi = 15-20$ in/out

take away Angkor Wat an what do u have to attract tourists?

Casinos?
Beaches, which are being cleaned up and with a lot of business growing. Islands, that aren't getting "worst island" reviews like the ones in thailand are, angkor wat, because you can't take it away, a fair amount of entertainment in PP and SR, budget options that are still a pretty unique experience for someone not 'burned out' on asia, homestays, hiking/biking/trekking trails, river trips... it's a long list actually man. i get that you don't like cambodia and think thailand is the only place that matters... it shows... heavily. but it really is a wonderful country that has it's own value to tourism. its why korea is starting direct flights to s'ville, and a lot of tourist agencies have really started paying close attention to it.

it's why in tripadvisor's top 25 list siem reap cambodia came in at 9th, while bangkok was 20th and chiang mai was 24th:

its why the new york times wrote an entire article on it:

??
all these fees/charges/tax are what you pay to fly anywhere ( except where you don't need a visa)/take taxi
Entrance for angkor is $20 for single day or $40 for 3 days

Thailand put the departure tax into their tickets years an years ago.

Ur totally wrong, i love Cambodia, own land there an have a Cambodian gf

its just i choose not to live there.
and to say Cambodia offers anything other than Angkor Wat for tourists compared to the other countries nearby...
I seriously wonder with out Angkor Wat an the casinos how many tourist would visit; Korean/ Chinese/ Vietnamese make up ( average ) over 40% of arrivals
ur wearing blinders or rose colored glasses.

its an add on country for any westerners traveling

NY times has written numerous articles on Thailand over the past 40 years and it has made the top tourist destinations for that time as well.

.
cambodia offers the same shit as any other south east asian country and in plus there's the damn Angkor Wat, a few islands, mangroves, the cardamons mountains, the tonle-sap lake, the rugged north-east, ethnic minorities, vietnamese, Cham muslims, elephants, swimming in the mekong, the Booze Boat in snooky, the 5-10$ hookers, 5$ for a carton box of cigarettes, 0.5$ for a beer on the beach, and much more ... discos .. bars .. ktv .. sleaze ...

what you can't do here that you can do in thailand ? only the shopping for electronics is a bit miserable and the postal system is in shambles but for anything else what's the problem ? we've many malls now in PP, not yet as good as Big C or Tesco but it's OK, still better than vietnam/laos/myanmar by a long shot.

besides, the whole country is a lot more exotic and fucked up than thailand, who wants to see the skyscrapers of BKK ? tourists want the novelty, something different, special, with personality, and cambo has a lot of personality, there's so much shit you only see in cambo ...

You still seem to hate it... you do nothing but constantly talk shit on it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed.

As another poster said, it would have pretty much the dead same as almost every other SEA country... but it ALSO has those things. Don't know why you keep wanting to take them away and down play them. It's not an "ass on" anymore... a lot of people are coming here direct for a week or so, then may hop over to Thailand for a weekend, and come back. Thailand is becoming the add-on for when they want a little more westernization with their asian experience.

everyone is partial.

to me, it is all about what point in the continuum the culture is.

Thailand is developed- they are even losing their "developing" trade category under GATT. with unemployment less than 1% it is obvious they are thoroughly modernized with consequent reliance on guestworkers.

a lot of the niche trade and entrepreneurial activities that formerly existed there are now to be found in cambo, burma, and laos.
those opportunities attracted a lot of the "old asia hands" in Thailand- some are so attached that they can't break across teh modern borders into countries like cambo and laos that were Thailand not so long ago.
tonle sap, siem reap, sisophon, battambang, pursat- hell as far as vientiane that was thailand a little over 100 years ago.

cock fightin, gong beatin, lao khao drinkin mofos.

if it walks like a duck...............................
