As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. Sihanoukville: reports of up to 40 foreign passports lost or stolen.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Reports by foreigners on Sihanoukville expat Facebook pages say that a batch of foreign passports, given to travel agents for visa renewals and extensions has disappeared, presumably stolen.
This remains unconfirmed, but a number of people have posted that their travel agent has effectively lost their passport. It is reported that the passports went missing about 10 days ago, also unconfirmed.

From Expats and Locals Living in Sihanoukville Facebook page, posted 4 Feburary 2017:

The vast majority of Sihanoukville residents' and visitors' visa renewals and extensions are dealt with by local travel agents who send them to Phnom Penh.
If anyone can confirm or deny this story, or has any news on what has happened to these passports, please post your information.

Yes, but not sure where it was stolen from exactly, though one poster suggests it was from a VB bus on arrival in PP. Here are some of the earlier posts FWIW :

Do you have any info on that apart from facebook ? One post said 100, another said at least 40. Where are these figures coming from ? I'm guessing they originate from what travel agents have been telling people who had their passport stolen, and different TAs were giving different figures... and by some sort of magical rumour law, figures expand in proportion to the number of times you repeat the amount... more than 40 becomes 50, which becomes almost 60, and so on. Just about anything is possible.

Someone also posted that all the stolen passports were British, but I find that hard to believe. Hopefully, we'll eventually get some better information on what happened, but for sure the travel agents aren't going to be bragging about this.

seems there trying to get everyone together to go to PP

from FB
They've arranged a bus to leave SHV tomorrow morning with everyone who's lost their passport. They're then taking you all to do a report in PP so their insurance can cover it.
Nb; this is just what I was told by Mien Mien. No idea of its accuracy.
one poster;
I already went to PP this week. Signed the police report. And came back very unsatisfied with the results. They only paid me 80$ for passport and 20$ for one night in a hotel. When I said that my embassy tells me to stay in PP for almost a week, they said that it is my problem. This exactly why I am trying to get people together.

I saw three Americans the other day on Street 51 who asked if I knew where the "Immigration police" (tourist police?) were as their passports had been stolen. They didn't stop long enough for me to actually help them though. Not sure what day it was, maybe Thursday.
