PPP Police Blotter thread

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Picture perfect rescue for Swiss photographer
Fri, 21 October 2016
Post Staff

A Swiss tourist in Phnom Penh got a front-row seat to a show of Cambodian mob justice when two men tried to steal his Nikon camera on Wednesday.
The thieves motorbiked up to the foreign photographer from behind, grabbing the camera and knocking their victim to the ground.
Nearby locals, however, refused to let the tourist’s trip be ruined, apprehending the thieves and returning the camera to its rightful owner.

The mob held the two thieves until police arrived – sneaking in a couple of kicks and punches for good measure.

‘Toying around’: thief’s pistol packs no punch
Wed, 26 October 2016

An angry group of villagers called a bumbling burglar’s bluff, chasing him out of a neighbourhood home yesterday.

The failed thief entered a house in Chbar Ampov armed with a toy gun, which he pointed at a small boy’s head, demanding payment.

The boy’s grandmother escaped and frantically appealed to locals for help. When a mob of villagers stormed the house, the robber tossed his useless weapon and fled.

Search for ‘love’ proves a quite pointed problem
Wed, 2 November 2016

An unfortunate john near Wat Phnom yesterday in search of some paid companionship found himself on the wrong end of a samurai sword.

The 30-year-old man, who was mute, was cruising around the area with his pockets full of cash when some opportune bandits decided to take the payment for themselves, brandishing their sword at the man and his tuk-tuk driver.

Police arrived only too late, but due to the man’s disability, could not discern how much he had lost, and sent him on his way.

Big time smuggler caught crossing from Thailand into Cambodia with 20 bottles of water...

Police crack down on border water bottles
Thu, 3 November 2016

A smuggler was stopped from surreptitiously taking bottled water over the Thai border yesterday, but claimed he was only arrested when he refused to pay off the border patrol.

The man, who was trying to enter Koh Kong province, told officials he was only bringing over a measly 20 bottles of water. Border police, however, said they had excused the illegal transporter too many times...

Deadbeat driver puts car – not card – in ATM
Mon, 7 November 2016
Touch Sokha

A driver was served a double whammy on Saturday night when he crashed into a motorbike and an ATM in the capital’s Daun Penh district.

The incautious man had first collided with a motorcyclist and, in his flustered attempt to flee, lost control of his steering wheel and crashed into an ATM located at the corner of the street.

The remiss wrecker took to his heels, leaving his car half-stuck in the ATM. District police have impounded the car at the police station and will take further legal action.

GPS helps find missing moto after boozy night
Thu, 10 November 2016

An act of drunken forgetfulness almost ended in disaster for a woman in the capital’s Tuol Kork district on Tuesday night.

Too drunk to make her own way home after a night of clubbing, the woman was driven home on her own motorbike by a compassionate companion and dropped off at her house.

However, the 23-year-old drunken woman passed out immediately, giving two opportunistic thieves an opening to rob her of her moto.

Thankfully, despite its owner being blind drunk, the GPS-equipped motorbike led the police right to the suspects.

A presumably famished burglar broke into a couple’s place in Stung Treng’s eponymous commune and took off with a large amount of food on Sunday.
The couple, who were away from their rental room-cum-store that night, returned to find $125 worth of dog meat and chilled beer they had bought to sell the next day gone.

The distressed duo have filed a complaint with the police, but they’re not harbouring any hope of getting their stocks back from the hungry housebreaker.
PPP.

Head-on hit-and-run a bad example for youth
Tue, 29 November 2016
A head-on collision at a traffic light at a busy Phnom Penh intersection led to one party fleeing headlong from the scene of the crime yesterday morning.

A car occupied by two women crashed into another vehicle loaded with four teens, but rather than acting as the responsible older party, the women took off.

Police pursued the panicky ladies, apprehending them and proposing to mediate a compensation agreement.

KOH SANTEPHEAP

Proposed alternative headline : Phnom Penh police set fine example, making crashy ladies pay for accident with cute teens.
