Kem Ley’s Baby Born as Ceremony Tensions Rise

by Sek Odom | October 4, 2016

The birth of slain political analyst Kem Ley’s fifth son has brought new life to his family, but bickering among some of his friends and relatives over how to honor the man threatens to fray the very unity his career aimed to create.

Plans to honor Kem Ley with a traditional 100-day ceremony were handed to a funeral committee made up of his friends and family after his widow, Bou Rachana, fled the country with her sons in late August to seek permanent asylum out of fear for their safety.

Kem Ley’s Wife Called to Court
Image
Ms. Rachana could not be reached for comment yesterday. But her brother, Bou Channy, said he was surprised to hear that the court issued a second summons for her to appear and answer questions about the murder, as his family had not filed a complaint and had not actually received the summons other than seeing it posted on Facebook.

“We do not understand the summons because our family has not yet filed a complaint because we are discussing it with our lawyers to find more evidence,” he said. “Moreover, we are busy with Ms. Rachana, who has just given birth.

He said the family would not attend the court date on October 17 because they never received the first summons, much less the second one.
“I think this is just to make the situation bad,” Mr. Channy said. “Who would dare to file a complaint besides the wife?”

It's not clear when or where Kem Ley's 100-day ceremony will take place. Looks like discussions/negociations are underway.

Ley Ceremony at Wat Chas, Says Wife
On Friday, local media reported that Phnom Penh City Hall had rejected the organizers’ request to have a 100-day ceremony at Wat Chas pagoda, saying that organizers needed to obtain permission from Mr. Ley’s family first.

Last Tuesday City Hall also rejected a similar request to hold a 100-day funeral ceremony at the city’s Wat Botum Park from Friday to Sunday, saying the venue was inappropriate for such a ceremony.

However, the organizing committee and Ms. Rachana said on Facebook yesterday that Mr. Ley’s 100-day ceremony will be held at Wat Chas pagoda, the same pagoda where his funeral was conducted, from Friday until the following Monday.

On Sunday morning there will be a procession from Phnom Penh to bring Mr. Ley’s statue to Takeo province, the post added...

Tue, 11 October 2016
Bun Sengkong

The abbot of Chroy Changvar district’s Wat Chas said yesterday he would not allow his pagoda to be used for the ceremony marking 100 days since the murder of outspoken political analyst Kem Ley.

“I, the abbot of Wat Por Yaram [Wat Chas] committee, have agreed with Phnom Penh administration’s notification to not allow the pagoda to be used to organise such an event,” abbot Meas Sakorn said in a letter to the committee organising the ceremony...

Pa Nguon Teang, head of the ceremony organising committee, said the plans for the ceremony on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, would still go ahead...

After the CNRP get permission to build their own tv station, they might get permission to build a new temple, and they might get permission to erect Kem Ley's statue, and they might ,,,,,,,,,

100-day funeral ceremony for Kem Ley will be allowed at Wat Chas pagoda from Friday to Sunday, under certain conditions.
Is it this Friday then, as in tomorrow ?

Khmer Times/May Titthara Thursday, 13 October 2016
City Hall to Allow Ley Funeral
After weeks of refusing to allow the funeral committee for murdered political analyst Kem Ley to hold any event in Phnom Penh, City Hall finally agreed yesterday to allow the group to hold the 100-day funeral ceremony at Wat Chas pagoda.

City Hall spent much of the week pressuring the Wat Chas pagoda chief, the Venerable Meas Sakhorn, to not allow the ceremony to be held at the pagoda.

But Phnom Penh Municipal Governor Pa Socheatvong met with members of the funeral committee on Tuesday at City Hall and agreed to allow the group to hold the 100-day ceremony from Friday to Sunday.

Despite allowing them to hold the event at Wat Chas, Mr. Socheatvong had a number of stipulations.
Citizens must not all arrive at the pagoda at the same time because it may cause traffic jams and the full procession on Sunday to Takeo province – Mr. Ley’s birthplace – cannot start at Wat Chas pagoda, he told the members of the funeral committee.
As for the procession, he had strict rules on how the committee could conduct it, telling them only five cars could start the procession and anyone following it had to start five minutes after the cars left Wat Chas...
