MoI says Kem Ley murder probe slowed by ‘stubborn suspect’

The Ministry of Interior yesterday blamed the lack of progress in the investigation into the murder of political analyst Kem Ley on the reluctance of chief suspect “Choub Samlab”, suggesting former Khmer Rouge torture chief Kaing Guek Eav, aka Duch, might be able to loosen his tongue.

More than a month has passed since the high-profile killing, allegedly committed by Oeut Ang, who identified himself by the alias translating to “meet to kill”.

Ministry spokesman Khieu Sopheak said no other suspects had been arrested.

“I hope the court will hold the trial very soon and it is a public trial,” Sopheak said. “Samdech [Sar Kheng] did not believe his name was really Choub Samlab. There is no parent who would name their child Choub Samlab.

“[He] did not confess and was stubborn, because, from what I understand, our law cannot do anything to him unless we do it in a peaceful way. What I understand is, if we call in Comrade Duch, he would make a confession.”

They could be going slow on the trial to allow him time to exercise his rights, to jump out the first floor window and land on his head. Story over. Don't tell me it has not happened before.

Kem Ley's wife hasn't been "approached or informed" by the authorities since the killing either.

The wife and children of slain political analyst Kem Ley have fled the country, people close to the family said yesterday, with one opposition member who has knowledge of their plans saying they would stay in a second country and seek asylum in the United States.

Speaking yesterday, Prince Sisowath Thomico said the family had left via Siem Reap for the second country – which the Post was asked to withhold out of concerns for her safety – with former Sam Rainsy Party lawmaker Sang San arranging the trip and consulting the United Nation’s refugee office (UNHCR).

The wife of assassinated political commentator Kem Ley is now in Thailand after fleeing Cambodia last week, according to the Bangkok Post.
Bou Rachana, the seven-month pregnant widow of the analyst, is waiting on a decision from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) about where she will be settled. Ms. Rachana and her four sons left Cambodia on August 28 after receiving refugee status from UNHCR.

City Hall will not allow a statue of slain political analyst Kem Ley to be built anywhere in Phnom Penh, a spokesman said yesterday, after a request for such a statue at Phnom Penh’s Freedom Park was rejected by authorities.

Phnom Penh municipality spokesman Mean Chanyada said Freedom Park was built for people to express their opinions, and the municipality would not allow statues for individuals, save for the monuments that already exist to late King Father Norodom Sihanouk, former Buddhist patriarch Choun Nath and Khmer poet Krom Ngoy.

“There will be no alternative solution for a location for Kem Ley’s statue – it’s a total ‘no’, not any place in Phnom Penh,” Chanyada said. “We don’t considerer whether it is a loss or a gain; we just do it based on the principle.”...
