Controversial Political Parties Law Change Prompts Concerns Among Opposition Supporters in U.S.
Under the new rules, all forms of financial contributions from overseas institutions and foreign-funded groups are banned from donating to political parties in Cambodia.
WASHINGTON DC — Controversial amendments to Cambodia’s law governing political parties has caused concern among opposition supporters in the United States, who fear that they could be barred from funding the Cambodia National Rescue Party under the new rules.
At a gathering on Sunday, CNRP lawmaker Ho Vann met supporters in Washington, DC, attendees said they were now being more cautious about using such events to bring in money ahead of local elections in June.
“Whatever ways they can find to help the people there [in Cambodia] it’s up to them,” said Ken Kiv, an organizer of the event.
Under the new rules, passed by Cambodia’s parliament earlier this month, all forms of financial contributions from overseas institutions and foreign-funded groups are banned from donating to political parties in Cambodia.
Rithy Ung, the head of an independent CNRP supporters’ group in the U.S., said while the law should not apply to Cambodian-Americans, he was concerned about how it may be interpreted.
“As members and supporters here at the party branch we have a right to support our party,” he said. “The Cambodian People’s Party supporters overseas help their party, too,” he said of the ruling party...

Sokha under fire for toilets claim
17 May 2017
Opposition CNRP leader Kem Sokha has told overseas Cambodians that a lack of toilets is creating miserable conditions for people at home.
Mr Sokha’s criticism was captured in video footage of a meeting with supporters on Sunday in the US city of Seattle.
The video, posted on Facebook, shows Mr Sokha saying: “Can you believe it? There are no toilets in homes yet.”
Ruling CPP spokesman Sok Ey San said the opposition was playing on people’s emotions to raise funds abroad and distorting reality.

Diaspora planning protests
8 September 2017
- The Cambodian diaspora is gearing up for a week of international anti-government protests in the wake of the surprise arrest of opposition leader Kem Sokha, even as the Cambodia National Rescue Party steadfastly refuses to protest their president’s detention on Cambodian soil.
Sokha’s daughter, Kem Samathida, shared a list of planned protests in Australia, Canada, France, the United States and New Zealand on Facebook yesterday, with protests also planned in Germany and Belgium.
Cambodian-Australian Hong Lim, a member of Australia’s state Parliament of Victoria who is helping organise Saturday’s protest in Melbourne, said the main focus of the demonstration is to pressure the international community into taking more concrete action against Cambodia.
While condemnations of the arrest have come in from different corners of the globe, no nations have pledged concrete action, such as economic sanctions...

Cambodian Americans protest in Long Beach over the jailing of a political leader in their homeland
- More than 300 Cambodian Americans rallied at a Long Beach park Sunday to demand the release of recently jailed Cambodian political leader Kem Sokha.
They chanted slogans, brandished signs, shouted condemnations through megaphones and sang old Cambodian folk songs from the 1950s.
The target of their vitriol: Cambodian Prime Minister HE, who has ruled the country for 31 years...
Sunday’s protest, organized in part by the Cambodian American Alliance, was part of multiple protests in Cambodian diasporas around the world, said one of the organizers, Boone Ran, 45.
Though the protesters were decrying human rights violations an ocean away in Cambodia, their cause resonated loudly in Long Beach, where the nation’s largest Cambodian diaspora resides. Dozens of motorists on Anaheim Street honked their horns in support and thrust clenched fists out their windows...
