America , land of the free

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Maybe I'm missing the point, but I don't see an issue with not being able to dance IN the monument.

Yeah, dick head cops, but that's to be expected damn near everywhere these days.

It was clearly unnecessary enforcement. However cops are not lawyers, like good little minions they follow orders. So the question is who gave the order and why. They can however be grateful that they were not found in violation of "the public dancing ordinance" in Cambodia. Survivors would have been prosecuted and deported.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

I understand that the authorities feel the need to keep order around monuments like this, which are, although not religious in nature, quite sacred in many people's minds.
However, I think that particular situation was very badly dealt with. In this case it was the police who disrespected the monument by using disproportionate force.
The protestors weren't being violent, there must have been some other way of dealing with it, because it's just bad PR having stuff like that going on in the public view.
Anyway, the lesson is don't fuck with DC's finest, especially not cyclist cops!

not aware of that ordince, but would that have been naked dancing in public by any chance? In the US it takes a lot less than that.

NOt everywhere - certainly not as bad as in USA. It's a police state. Constitutional rights mean nothing. It's legalized extortion by law enforcement, lawyers, prosecutors, interrogators, politicians etc. Motto seems to be screw people over and cause them a problem any way you can - one has no rights when it comes to law enforcement and their trumped up charges. The more people they can arrest, put in jail, handcuff etc. for any reason the better it is for them - also the general public is also to blame - just look at verdicts juries come out with such as putting one in jail from protecting themselves against home invaders etc. etc. Look how much of a proportion of persons are in jail in usa compared to other countries.

Just one look at the cop with the bikehelmet, and you want to do as he tells you, and gtf out of their world.
They are basically scared of being disrespected in public, and was probably bored as hell that day.

Come on, the US of A are only number two in the world when it comes to Incarceration rates:

Seychelles 799 prisoners per 100,000 population
United States of America 693 prisoners per 100,000 population

In comparison Central African Republic 16 prisoners per 100,000 population. But that is probably because they just go and shoot any suspect.

wouldn't a simple, "sorry, that is not allowed here, please move along" have been a better, more effective response to the situation??
:beer3:

The more people they can arrest, put in jail, handcuff etc. for any reason the better it is for them
Zmth; what bs, who is them?? the government, who is made up of the people??
