"False Advertising? We Don't Got No False Advertising"

Post by Sailorman »

Interesting things you read on cans of food:

I recently bought a can of "Ham Luncheon Meat" which has a "Product of USA" and a picture of America as a US flag on the front. (Highway Brand) It also stated "U.S Inspected and passed by Dept. of Agriculture."

On the back in small letters/words its says "Packed under license..... Singapore." If that's not confusing enough, its distributed by a company in Malaysia. Obviously some misleading advertising. (Didn't taste that great either.)

Actually it's not uncommon for Singapore to buy in bulk from some countries and repackage it in containers with instructions and info in other languages, sometimes after adding flavouring or vitamins to suit the market they are selling it in. Take a look at milk powder from NZ and Australia as a example where it has vitamins added for baby milk formula, or Flora margarine , a product of Australia , but packaged with Chinese or Arabic writing on it for those markets . I just looked at the underside of my container of Flora margarine to confirm that. It's nothing new to the Singaporeans, remember they have been repackaging shipping containers since ?????.

Not really "ham", more like jelly and chicken lips. Makes me kind of wonder about a Muslim country (Malaysia) processing pig products. I guess money ace's out their religion. Instead of an America flag on the can, there should be a Malaysian flag and a disclaimer, "Not Halal."

As was pointed out to me by my brother-in-law, on our recent trip to Malaysia , there was a large market in Kota Bharu that we saw selling pork to locals.

Well, as this is the False Advertising thread.

"there was a large market in Kota Bharu that we saw selling pork to locals" with a hand written sign saying 'Ayam'.

As I said, mystery meat jelly and chicken lips. (with an American flag proudly displayed on the front of the can.) In America we call it Spam. Its interesting in that the Eskimo's and Hawaiian's love Spam. Go figure.

Please enlighten me, what is "Ayam?" All I could come up with is that its some kind of Muslim hat.
