Volunteering in Asia ? Read on...

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. This guy goes to volunteer in Asia: You won’t believe what happens next!
by Anna Greene30th April 2015

What happens next!? Absolutely nothing fucking interesting happens next, and stop pretending otherwise, do-gooder! In fact, you are the shittiest, most boring kind of traveler around. Let me lay out two things for you and knock you off that high horse you currently straddle, you pompous asshole:

(1) Nobody cares. Having shifted contexts does not make you more interesting to anyone except yourself. You’re still the same fucking person, which brings us to point 2;

(2) You’re still useless to society. Actually, you are even more useless than you previously were.

We’ll get back to both of these points later, but before I shit on you and your stupid, simple expectations, let’s take a step back and take a look at what all these ostensibly good intentions mean for travel in a wider sense...

Well, I thought it was quite funny. 8-)

Funny! and rather true as well...

i probably see it more than anyone on my facebook, i praise people wanting to help out the less fortunate countries, but if your only doing it to plaster your facebook full of pictures for "likes" and to gain praise then it defeats the object, youre not really thinking about the less fortunate youre only thinking about yourself, if there wasnt a facebook to show off what you are doing, then i bet my house (i dont own one) that you wouldnt bother doing it...

"As self-righteous white people compete to one-up each other in the ‘legitimacy race’, and because we are living in an age of stupid, mindless, bland feel-good-do-goodisms, volunteering while traveling or taking on non-profit work in some poor country has unfortunately become a big thing."

this made me lol..."The Native is expected to be our pal and shower us with thanks for the whiteness of our presence!"

I enjoyed that. Read another piece by a male co-author. Have a feeling the female writer (Anna Greene) is his ex-GF. Only guessing from a piece on a visit to Siem Reap in which he and the GF break up. The drop-down menu listing writers has no "Anne Greene". He pretty much nails Siem Reap in terms of the emptiness of the activities of the youthful traveller in town for temples and extreme behaviour.

Right, here's the perfect example. Great intentions, but this is totally la-la. Volunteer holidays "to help the poor" in Cambodia have become the cool thing to do. Do you have nothing to offer in the way of skills ? Please share that with the kids of Cambodia.

Hi everyone,
My lovely friend and I are coming to Cambodia in a few weeks time and our sole purpose is to volunteer.
We are coming for 3 weeks and want to help children with English and teach dance. We are super friendly caring people with so much love to share!! We are looking for somewhere trustworthy to volunteer. When I say trustworthy I mean for the children, somewhere that has good child protection and not somewhere exploiting children's rights. We are really passionate about helping as much as we can and really want to find a great suitable place we can volunteer at. Posting in this page because we want to volunteer down south near the beaches and hope someone knows something!! We feel the best way to find the best places is to ask local/in country people! Google can be difficult! Hope you can help!!

Volunteerism is OK if you get a perks like a prostitute, a dark room and a bottle of Jim beam on the side.

Travellers beware - advice on donating to orphanages and volunteering, traps to avoid: http://carryforkids.org/beware

On volunteering:
A more recent scam is aimed at Volunteers. Beware of any volunteer scheme that asks you for money up front.

I met one young girl who had paid out over USD$3,000.00 to teach english in Cambodia to poor children. All she got for her money was a room in a USD$12.00 per night guest house for 3 weeks and the introduction to the school. Transport to and from the school was supposed to be in the deal but never surfaced. A handsome profit for the Volunteer agency. I met two other girls scammed by the same operator.

I also met a young couple who thought they were helping to construct an orphanage to later find out they were building someones future house! They too had paid over the top for accommodation and food.

Best to go through reputable organisations such as Australian Volunteers International or Australian Business Volunteers. There are good organisations you can volunteer through without any up front payment. Ensure you are self supported, have a current Police clearance and up to date CV. Do not go unprepared. Again research the project and requirements well in advance.
You cannot expect to help out at an orphanage unless you have skills to offer and do not use the centres as a means to have a cheap holiday at the children’s expense. If the centre accommodates you then you should be prepared to at least put your hand in your pocket for food and drink.
The underlined made me laugh - and also wonder how often this happens

Anybody with intelligence and a Tefal or teaching qualification, would instead look to work teaching English, if they want to make money, as well as help the locals learn a useful language. Really there isn't much else a tourist can do, apart from helping out locals by buying their services, etc.

With reference to volunteering in Cambodia, people should avoid it because it will probably involve orphanages and there are a lot of discussions on tripadvisor that advise against that for many reasons.

This orphanage looking for volunteers:
Image Posted today on social media.
Orphanage volunteering is still thriving it seems. This one is in Siem Reap.
Good to know that anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty can build a school, no experience necessary. I get that the orphanage doesn't have much money, but not sure that this is the answer.
However, these people are generously donating their time, while getting free training on how to build brick walls, and after all it doesn't take much skill and any fool with half-a -brain can become a brickie overnight, right Jamie ? What do you think of the wall btw ?
