FunnY debate.

I was proud of myself for telling all the scammers here in Addis to fuck right off. Great fun! I'm starting to get hit up by the same ones all over again with the same pitch. Most of them now catch themselves within their first sentence and just smile and walk off, but some are getting pretty far and are pretty upset when I finish their story for them (as it never changes).

I've literally been hit up at least 10 times over the last couple days by the, "hey, I work at your hotel, I just said hello and you walked right past me. You didn't see me? So, I'm on my lunch break, just want to walk around. You want to go check out a college party right now that's only once a year? Many beautiful single college girls there....."

If I had come here 10 years ago I'm pretty sure I would have fell prey a time or 2.

Anyways, someone told me the trick was to tell them to fuck off WITHOUT upsetting them. I guess I agree, but where's the fun in that?

I got belligerent with a scamming street vendor in the Philippines once, as I couldn't walk 3 steps forward down the sidewalk without one scammer/salesman after another stepping in front of me and block my path for their usual spiel. Try dealing with that every day for a few weeks without losing it.

So one guy I told to get the fuck out of my way, as I saw him from far off changing his direction to make sure he blocked me from walking. It felt great for 11 seconds. Then he screamed to all the other ne'er-do-well filipino losers hanging around and they ran over and tried to corner me. They were set for a whitey beat-down. I saw it coming and was quicker than them. I was lucky to get out of the situation unharmed.

I won't be doing that again. Not on their turf, anyway. I now say "no thanks" and go about my merry way.

^Yep. I guess that's part of the fun. Feeling like you are lucky to not have gotten your ass kicked after telling them off.

I've also gotten a little physical with 2 pickpockets here this trip again.

Saw his hand right on my pocket while his buddy was pulling my arm and I slapped the fuck out of him (a open fisted swing right across his temple) . He drops his books or whatever crap he was selling.

And I saw the same setup coming again the next night, and as soon as the guy grabbed my arm I pushed him over into a pile of dirt, and the actual pickpocket did a 180°, LoL. The locals cheered for that one!

I have had several versions of "tonight there is a ceremony at this hard to find wat X, that only happens every 4 years, do you want to share a ride?" In BKK

If i have some time to kill I always play along first, and ask questions about details, clarifications of obvious inconsistencies in the story.

Typically it only takes one or two control questions before the evasive replies start creeping in....
After they spend 5-10 mins trying to be both consistent and not saying anything too specific
I usually take out my smartphone and in surprise mention I can't google it.
Next time is wasting their time on Google maps asking and re-asking how they spell this street name where it is supposed to be located.
My record was keeping a Wat scammed in BKK occupied for 45 mins, after a while he was so frustrated that I hardly had to monitor his statements for logical inconsistencies, I just randomly asked him things like how are you related to this taxi driver, wouldn't it be cheaper with a tuktuk ...
Then when I get bored I just leave saying I changed my mind!
The only resource they have is time, steal it and steal plenty of it to make them hurt much more than a wise remark or an insult.
It also keeps you sharp ;)

One of Scammer Steve's favourites is that he needs to get to a meeting/appointment/interview at a certain church/NGO/business and can you help him find it as he has the address but can't find it. Magically its always across town, it's urgent, and he doesn't have the price of a tuktuk ride. He puts on a pretty good show of getting increasingly anxious about now. First time he tried us out it was a bogus address so we offered to call the church for the right address. Later we offered to send him in a tuktuk that happens to be driven by a good friend of ours and we would pay directly later. At this point Steve realises that we've been to this rodeo before and comes up with creative reasons to move on and try another mark.

But time is a resource for me too... that's why I literally don't respond to strangers who approach me on the street, anywhere.

Just when you thought you could relax... Scammer Steve's back in town. Which town ? Not sure, Kampot or Sihanoukville, but whatever, social media are following his every move.
And what's more creepy, the scammer or the social media progress reports on his every move? Not sure, so I'm just passing this on.
Take your precautions, but who knows, maybe he's chill now. LOL.
(No judgement on LV. Thanks for the info.)

I first met him about 8 years ago in Boeng Trabaik. He was looking for a church because he had lost his passport in Siem Riep and blah blah blah.About a year later a friend gave him a guesthouse room for the night and he stole alcohol or something. Quite recently he has been sitting on the wall on the riverside appearing quite comfy and not begging. Did he win Lotto?
