Modern Cambodian Houses Made Out of Lego Bricks For the Poor

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. This book says grab some mud from a rice field, and mix it with rice straw. Then throw it in a mould and presto, we have a mud brick.
Don't tell me its not hard work though, cause I've done it, but don't have any land to build on.

Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

True. But why is the land price so high? I mean Cambodia is not that small country (land-area) and population is just ~15 million. When you fly over Cambodia, it's practically empty country. But land prices are just ridiculous.
i think outside the ciries ,pp,batbang, snv, siem riep they are cheap.

Where does it say they don't need mortar?
And where does it say they do need mortar ?
at first i was going to say it was obviously bonded (likely with mortar)
but then i double checked the block and they have tapered edges to give the illusion of joints, but still it must have some sort of adhesive/mortar, it just wouldnt be structually sound without it, if they were bigger blocks and weighed a lot more then sure, but the size of the blocks, and the weight (i can judge by the way hes holding it) the size of the "Key" (theyre not that deep, plus if a mortar is used then it would make them slightly pointless, so it could be right that no mortar is used) i just cant see how it could be structually sound.
id be interested to learn more about it, and the specs, as i could be missing some details,
if I remember correctly they are using a bit mortar, the blocks are small but heavy
and the house is cooler than a smilar house build with clay bricks
heavy compared to what? how many Newtons are they?

Earthbag / bagged rice hulls is the way to go here for cheap unskilled builder home in southeast Asia IMHO. Cheap and they are super insulated to keep the air conditioned interior cool.
[http://www.naturalbuildingblog.com/rice ... bag-house/] [Rice Hull Earthbag House] is good, have a look at it!

For anyone interested in how these bricks are used/built, they start off with a mortar base to get a level base, then the blocks are dry bonded then core filled with a cement mix, you can see in this video at
13:50 - Laying the mortar base and running the first coarse through (so badly lol)
18:50 - Dry bonding the wall
22:12 - Core filling the holes with a cement mix

I agree, but compacted earth walls are quicker. Just make sure you keep the rain off the walls with a low hanging roof or something. Mud walls also suck all the moisture out of the rooms, so low humidity too.

For a minute there I thought you wrote level base Jamie. Ha ha ha. Next you will use silly words like plumb or straight! I thought damp proof course was hilarious as well.
Next you will be advocating bracing to the columns in the houses on stilts.
