Be extra careful

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Be extra careful

Post by banlaor »

Hi everyone. You may be aware that there there's a law enforcement campaign against drugs in Cambodia right now (a.k.a a "crackdown"). You are certainly aware that in virtually all countries law enforcement can get ahold of security camera/mic recordings from clubs, hotels, et cetera. What I worry some may not have considered is the potential for certain people to take advantage of this. For example, a scammer could record words spoken by you in location A, edit your words with some simple computer software in location B, and then play the edited version of your words in location C, where location C is known by the scammer to be a location already being recorded by a legitimate agency. Or a scammer with some hacking skills or physical access to your phone/sim could make it appear that you are texting things that you are not. A clever person can figure out how to damage another person's reputation unfairly, which can have dire consequences here.

Most of us are kind people who would never do such things to a fellow, but not everyone in this world is kind. I have had some related experiences that I wish I could forget. If you think you're in the sights of a group that is setting you up, trust your gut. The earlier you walk away, the safer you will be. You don't need to touch the stove and get burned to know that the stove is hot. Also, if you are a good person and one day a girl tells you to delete her number and forget her, consider she may be trying to tell you the same thing I am.

Take care, friends.

I used to have similar concerns. I felt so paranoid all day every day.

Nowadays, I go nowhere without my GoPro on my head. That way I also have original recordings. You could give that a try.

Thanks for the heads up, but this does not/cannot apply to residents of Sihanoukville. We already have a "reputation" : :3some: :bong: :flasher1: :downtown: :rambo: :tard: :2girlsit8: %) :rave: etc ( feel free to add anything I've forgotten)...

... all of it mostly completely false of course. O:-) O:-) O:-)

But it makes a smear campaign extremely unlikely. Lol.

Why the hell would anyone bother to "set you up"?
The only people I ever hear complaining about stuff
like this are drug dealers when they are caught.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

There are people in PP who will take advantage of groups like aple the same way, sure. I have seen it; I have been close to these people; it isn't paranoia.
