Australia's reffos- where are they now?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Australia's reffos- where are they now?

Post by willyhilly »

Are there any refugees still here? Has anyone ever met one? If there are any here can anyone tell me where I could meet one?

EASY QUESTION --- EASY ANSWER

The reffos integrated into Australian society - the Italians, the Greeks, the Balts and (later) the Sino-Vietnamese "Boat People" ...

A few went wrong but most simply became Australians.

Compare and contrast with the Sudanese "Lost Boys" and the Muslim Lebanese crime families ...

As far as I know, I think one, a Rohingya went back to Myanmar, and an Iranian couple went back to their own country. I thought there was one still here. They were originally housed in some sort of "compound" and assisted by some Australian personnel. From the scant information available it seems to me that the whole integration program was ill thought out, but of course I have little information. I would be interested to know the current status of the "programme"

Edit actually it seems two are still here:

Australia's Cambodia refugee resettlement plan 'a failure'

"Three of the five refugees who arrived in Cambodia under the deal have returned to their countries of origin and two remaining in the capital Phnom Penh are deeply unhappy and also want to quit the country."

"An Iranian man in his early 20s – the only other refugee from Nauru remaining in the country – has also complained to relatives about broken Australian promises, and told them he plans to return to Iran in a few months.

In the Al Jazeera interview Mr Phay Siphan revealed a plan to build a refugee centre in Cambodia "controlled by the Australian embassy".

No details about the plan have been made public." http://www.smh.com.au/world/australias- ... nx3jv.html

If they are returning to their countries of origin, it sounds like it's been a huge success.

I would be interested in finding out exactly how much money has been handed over and who got it and what it was spent on. Meanwhile it looks like the OZ government has found some money from somewhere to pay for a refugee center ?
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Proof that they weren't genuine refugees in the first place!

Looks like there is only one left as I originally thought, and OZ Gvt. seems a bit cagey about the whole deal.

Bit of info from the net - 11 Aug 2016
.
The Australian Government has refused to explain why it has added a second refugee resettlement agency in Cambodia, when only one person has resettled there from Nauru.

Under the $55 million Australia-Cambodia deal, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) was contracted to provide services for the Nauru refugees.

Australia has now engaged Connect Settlement Agency (CSA) to provide additional support.

"We are providing services in Cambodia but it's a very small program," said Laurie Nowell, spokesman for AMES Australia, a partner organisation with CSA.

Mr Nowell said the arrangement had only been in place for a short time and referred further questions to the Australian Government.

Australia pledged $40 million in aid money to the Cambodian Government to secure the deal, and allocated $15.5 million for resettlement services.

In total, five refugees resettled from Nauru to Cambodia, but four have since chosen to go back to their countries of origin.

Bit of background: The Cambodia agreement Madeline Gleeson Monday, 11 April, 2016

On 26 September 2014, Australia and Cambodia signed an agreement providing for the relocation of refugees from Nauru to Cambodia. The agreement is set out in two instruments:

Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Government of Australia relating to the Settlement of Refugees (MOU), and
Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Settlement of Refugees in Cambodia (Operational Guidelines).

The agreement was negotiated in secrecy without consultation with parliament or civil society in Australia or Cambodia, and its terms were not made public until after the signing. The agreement has received widespread criticism from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as well as from politicians, lawyers, refugees, human rights advocates and members of the public in both countries.

I think that there is only one left but Turnbull claims there are three. Imagine a politician lying like that! Now we are to take people from Central America, cocaine smugglers and death squad operatives.
As for Sudanese, North Melbourne has a good one and the Swans have a really good one, a defender.
There are several more in the system who may succeed. They are tall and fast, perfect for AFL.
