Flicking through the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC of October 1964 ... Thomas J. Abercrombie (probably deceased by now) was writing about Cambodia and, briefly,
about an American in Chroi Dang, a village or small town on the Mekong and roughly equidistant between Phnom Penh and Svay Rieng...

" Marty had come to Chroi Dang a year earlier for USAID. When the Americans were forced to close down [after one of Sihanouk's legendary temper tantrums] Marty,
backed by the villagers, wrote a letter to Prince Sihanouk and was asked to stay on as a private citizen."

According to Abercrombie, the departure of USAID was in January 1964.

Is there a lingering folk memory of Marty?

I know nothing locally about the American in question. My goggle searches lead me to.believe he died outside of Cambodia. However the photographer who is mentioned in your blurb is far more fascinating. I think you.might enjoy this.

Awesome life that guy had. Ack when the world was a much simpler place. Freedom isn't what it used to be. As for Chroi Dang, I'll have a look at my maps.

Marty's name was Martin J. Clish ( not a mispelling - CLISH)

Clish died young and is buried in Marquette, Michigan

It seems he was an agric-advisor in India and Laos, too.

The map in the same issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC shows a place marked as Poste Deshayes, East of the Mekong and roughly due North of Senmonorom.

Is is 99% certain to have another name by now, but is it still around?

Probably Koh Gnieh. Can you take a picture of the map? I couldn't find anything Romanized as Chroi Dang, but having a more specific location would help. I have e a very good map with most of the modern village names.
