Oh, the joy!

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Surely, all your neighbors are affected as well. This is normal, as you know.

Get with the program.

Won't surprise you to hear that "the program" includes parking all the motos in our doorway (along with a couple of sleeping nests) and pulling the Lexus into the tent directly in front of our place for the night while the front of their own property is blessed with nothing but space. I had the audacity to bring the big tuktuk in off the street into the shared driveway for the night (in an attempt to keep at least some fuel for the morning) and the "what the hell do you thing you're doing, barang?" looks from the staff were hostile.

Fortunately I'm up at 5am, but Mrs S usually likes at least a couple more hours of sleep. Won't be happening tomorrow I suspect.

Incidentally UT, the 'other neighbours' were clearly aware that tonight was the dry run, and left their vehicles parked up in their own bays. Only numbnuts here moved vehicles when asked.

I think I will. Closer to you, in fact. If you were to shout on your balcony, we'd hear you from our new balcony. How do you feel about church music?

Edit: And yep, the new place has it's own secure carport/garage.

An update. The monks hit it at 5.15 this morning as I was getting ready to leave for work. Mrs S contacted me around lunch time to say she'd fled the building and was enjoying the tranquility of Jars of Clay. We met up, farted around avoiding going home, eventually had to, and discovered the tent was being removed at 3.30pm.

We found the shared compound had been left littered with food scraps, wadded tissues and other loveliness. It occurred to me I'd had a bit of a dick attitude towards this family for a while so I decided to just get in and clean down our front area (rather than bitching about it), subtly hosing some of the food waste and cigarette butts over the invisible demarcation line. Then I realised I was still being a dick so I cleaned down their front area as well... that'll really mess with their heads.

Fortunately Cintri is pretty good in our area (enough government officials in the neighbourhood) so the split bags of rubbish should be cleared tonight - the rats are having an absolute field day.

So, is this the new thing then? Bass Ackward weddings? Start late in the afternoon with the blessings, a couple of quick songs and a quiet meal, and then lights out by 9pm, followed by a 5am start, lots of loud noise, and out by (presumably) 2pm? Weird.

Positive note - truly impressed with how quickly those wedding marquees can go up and down. Up in about 90 minutes including the coloured bunting, down and out in around 20 minutes.

There is actually a Prakas out limiting the decibels as well as the times this can go on.

And don't give me this local tradition BS. Loud music was played in the old times to let all the village know a wedding was on but that was before the invention of amplifiers and cheap loudspeakers....

Unfortunately, funerals don't count apparently. I wouldn't normally even comment - it's hard to complain about being inconvenienced by grief; but we've had 2 ceremonies closeby, one after the other, since Sunday. I am adapting to living in a storm of loudspeakers - even better, they've just fired up the generator which is even louder than the speakers.
But once it's all over, the peace will be amazing. (And I'm alive to appreciate it :) )

However, if it starts up again at 4-5am tomorrow I might just commit suicide so that I can have a noisy funeral too. That'll show them. %)

I've heard from multiple sources that the loudness of the music is to a) demonstrate to the uninvited neighbours what a great time is being had, and b) keep away evil spirits. Not sure of either, but I'm deeply relieved at how this particular wedding turned out!

Mrs S heard from a friend about the unusual timing - it seems that the done thing now is to do the traditional stuff at the house (which IS about keeping the spirits happy, apparently) but then move on to a good hotel or restaurant for the better food and louder noise. All fine by me!

It seems the neighbours didn't think much of me cleaning their yard, once I was done and the slab was dry they opened the house and swept it through, leaving the inside rubbish where I'd cleaned. Sheesh! I consider myself a bit of a master at being petulant, but I can learn from these guys. Not long now...
