Some old pictures

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

I gather from one of the photos here that it was once common for Khmer women to go topless?

I have tried unsuccessfully to find this out in the past.

Perhaps Mr Bingham, being well informed on historical affairs of the region could comment.

Zhou Daguan, who visited Cambodia in 1296-7, noted that "Generally speaking, the women, like the men, wear only a strip of cloth bound around the waist, showing bare breasts of milky whiteness."

I have seen many photos of bare-breasted women from the late 19th-early 20th century. In remote tribal areas it is still possible to see this. I assume that the habit died out during the French period. It was probably discouraged by authorities and seen as primitive or even obscene from a Christian/civilized outlook.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
