It's the same for the USA ....you dont see true Americans in the city.....Real America is where the red necks live...Samouth wrote:in order to understand more about Cambodia culture. Foreigner should travel to the province quite often or live there for awhile.

Nonsense. And how would you know anyway? Do you get all your views on Amerca by watching The Dukes of Hazzard reruns?General Chatter wrote:It's the same for the USA ....you dont see true Americans in the city.....Real America is where the red necks live...Samouth wrote:in order to understand more about Cambodia culture. Re: Samouth's Close Calls with Arranged Marriages in Cambodi
I lol'd. I hear this a lot from rednecks actually. I was raised in Oregon but am always told by the country folk that I'm from Portland, not Oregon (or Seattle, not Washington). Most of the time they're not even trying to be mean, they just actually think the "real America" is in the country. Too much spoonfeeding from Fox news, I say. I hadn't realized this idiotic sentiment had spread internationally.Soi Dog wrote:Nonsense. And how would you know anyway? Well most Americans live in urban areas and most khmer live in rural areas, so a difference in where you'll find the best representation of the broader national culture makes sense.

Re: arranged marriage
Well said.Soi Dog wrote:Arranged marriage was the world-wide standard until very recently. The practice of marrying for love was extremely rare even in the West until just a few hundred years ago, and caught on very gradually since. Marriage was most often a cementing of ties between families (or oddly, within families) as a matter of economics. I believe arranged marriage is still by far the norm in much of the world, definitely in India, Pakistan, the Middle East and most of Africa.
I never have, and never will, understand how fathers anywhere could sell or marry off their own daughters to men their daughters objected to. I hope that unfortunate scenario is not common in Cambodia.
As long as both sets of parents have their son's/daughter's best interest at heart, and the potential bride and groom have the final say whether or not the match is acceptable, then it's a fine, time-tested custom. It shouldn't ever be forced upon anyone.
I would add that with the provisions and limitations SD stated, I do think it is a better system than the quickly fallen apart love bonds only, modern weddings.
