Do you mean like instead of 'dop pii' (twelve), they say 'pii don dop'? (something like that anyway)
yeah, usually when people are saying their age and stuff like that, think its more of informal chat
I think the use if phonetic reversals is pretty common through out the country. Here is an interesting analysis of the phenomenon. http://reankhmer.com/jml/classroom/28-h ... c-reversal
Regarding numbers, I can only recall it being used with the dop numbers.
cheers for that was an interesting read
going to investigate what the Sai Sabbok alternate meaning could be
i was always under the impression it was just a play on words and didnt mean anything
its interesting because this is very similar to cockney rhyming slang

i guess it must be more common around cambodia, maybe its just the people involved in the beach culture down here that make it seem more common, the kids that work the beach and the girls who work the bars that as kids worked the beach tend to be the ones i notice using it the most

for the Sok Sabbay play on words...
សុខសប្បាយ - Sok Sabbai
សាយសប្បុខ - Sai Sabbok

i cant really see what it could be as the "Sabbok" doesnt come up with anything even after playing around with the consonants
Sai means basically to scatter/disperse

They don't all have an alternate meaning as far as I'm aware.

I think you're onto something, Jamie.

The quote from the link provided by Raybull "In Khmer language, you can alter a phrase into a list of unrecognizable words by transpose the different syllables to obfuscate the meaning."

But I admit that when i read that you could reverse the words, for a moment I could feel my brain was being mind fucked over. I mean, with all the slangs, regional, and now reversal? oh my god, why the language is getting so hard to learn?
that's why i came up with the username "thelost" because that's what learning khmer does to me. making me lost.

taabarang is right, they use "don dop" from 11 to 19 , for example, 11 - muay don dop, 12 - bee don dop, 13, bey don dop.....and for 7 - bram bpee. it's nothing to do with reversal or play on words. it's just...i dont know what it is but i heard it all over cambodia, not just only kompong som / preah sihanouk.

man...i still can't get over the "sai sabbok" thing. wtf is that thing, man??

yeah thats why i thought it might have had some secret meaning like the rest of the play on words in Raybulls links
some secret meaning that we dont know about and was an internal joke that we was never supposed to get
hence why it always gets a reaction
im still going to investigate a little

Yeah I'm curious as to what's the "secret meaning" is. Please let us know. They can be tricky. I mean, what kind of person comes up with the "Ombel Omboy / Fucking salt"? A tricky person, that's what.
