Re: Pagoda problems: the decline of Buddhism in Cambodia
"Can someone explain to me how Buddhism is not a religion?"
I certainly can't. Any belief system with a heavenly reward for a good life or a more propitious next life and a hell for punishment sounds like just another theological insurance policy to me.

it all depends on what you believe a religion to be,Barang chgout wrote:Can someone explain to me how Buddhism is not a religion?

Religion in its modern sense is based on the word/belief spread with the Christianity movement
and is basically the worshiping of a god to become reconnected with god, from the latin Re- (again) -ligō (unite/connect)
in Buddhism and other religions there isnt actually an equivalent word to mean the same as "Religion"
there is no gods or no divine messengers etc
but the way i notice cambodians/thais worshipping the buddha it would give off the impression of religion
but the buddha in fact teaches to not worship a divine superpower, as the only person that can help/change your life is yourself
but i guess thats now lack of knowledge of the teachings of buddha
which i guess goes hand in hand with thread, although maybe a different angle
recently when ive been in church for weddings/christenings over the past few years
ive noticed how preachy christianity actually is, you must do this, you must do that, you must worship god and jesus etc etc
ive not been christian since primary school, just never really believed the whole god thing, was more into greek mythology lol

monks certainly can do all that. as long as they realise that doing all that will not help them to achieve enlightenment, psyche level 99

Buddha may have said that, but Buddhism has a plethora off gods and divine beings, not even counting the animist ones that became incorporated. Here's a blurb about the god of hell called Yama. Now you know where the drug term came from.

^^ Sorry Taa, that is not where the 'drug term' came from.
ยา - yaa - drug; medicine; remedy; medication; having to do with medical treatment
ม้า - maa - horse
The original yaamaa tablets had a horse stamped/imprinted on them. They were also referred to as yaabaa. (Crazy medicine - make you crazy)
บ้า - baa - crazy

I was referring to Thai language use which I did not specify. Compelling argument from your side anyway. Were you writing Thai or Khmer letters?
As you know I am illiterate in both. Could it be a pun?
