Forced marriages under the Khmer Rouge

Post by Rutiger »

Not much different than ISIL is doing these days, forced marriages were common under the Khmer Rouge regime. Here is a quote from segment one : "If you dare oppose to Angkar, whether with your hands or your legs, they will be cut off." Some terrified girls who tried to disobey were bayonetted. I knew about forced marriage, but I didn't know the newly married couples were then immediately marched off into a nearby compartments to have sex.

Click on the link below to view the 3 video segments of this story. The segments run from 4 to 8 minutes long. They are definitely worth a look.
Marriage under the Khmer Rouge
Some half a million people are thought to have been forced into marriages by the Khmer Rouge, but because of the nature of the crime many victims have found the subject particularly difficult to discuss. As members of these forced unions grow more comfortable talking about their experiences, and the Khmer Rouge tribunal hears testimony on the subject, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge.

In these three films, the Post talked to victims, including one of the country's most powerful businessmen, to lawyers participating in tribunal proceedings, and to experts who have sought to understand the cultural and psychological effects of Cambodia's history of forced marriage.

Married Off by the Khmer Rouge, and ‘Nobody Could Help Me’
By STÉPHANIE GIRY SEPT. 10, 2016
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — In a vast courtroom on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, a middle-aged Cambodian woman soberly described a night nearly four decades ago that she said she had never talked about before.

The local leader of the Khmer Rouge government had assigned her to marry one man, but at the last minute decided on another, she told the court. On their wedding night in early 1977, she refused his advances. The man complained to the chief, who raped her and threatened to kill her, before sending her back to live with her new husband...

She was apparently forced to marry a cadre, of which there were tens of thousands. There was never any suggestion she married one of the "top guys". It's all conjecture anyway.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

the Cadre she married was fellow singer Sos Math, but their marriage wasnt forced and divorced after 6months,
after the divorce she went back to her family province, but Sinn Sisamouth convinced her to carry on her singing career and moved back to PP,
she then married the son of some film company and had a kid,
she then had a romantic relationship with a high ranking parachutist who later died in combat,
phnom penh then fell to the KR and she was put out in a camp in Phnom Sruorch, Kompung Speu
later when Ros Sereysothea identity was discovered she was taken to Pol Pot who forced her to marry one of his assistants,
they had many fallings out and the camp leader decided that they didnt need her and her family and shipped them off to Kampong Saom but was never seen again

The "cadre" I mentioned was what you called a "Pol Pot Assistant" in your post. Either way none of the story after the 1975 takeover can be properly substantiated.

there is no mention of his rank only that he was his assistant,
i cant imagine Pol Pot having tens of thousands of Cadre/Assistants as he was paranoid out of his box, he had most people around him killed because of his paranoia

Angelina Jolie has paid tribute to the survivors of forced marriage under the Khmer Rouge and pledged to continue advocating on behalf of women and girls who suffer from sexualized violence in conflict.
Speaking at an event held by the British Embassy in Phnom Penh on Tuesday night, Jolie – who co-founded the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative with former British foreign secretary William Hague in 2012 – welcomed efforts to prosecute the practice of forced marriage during the ultra-Maoist regime between 1975 and 1979.

“I’m of course very conscious of the part that played in the suffering of the Cambodian women in the genocide
,” she said.

The crime of forced marriage has now been prosecuted at the tribunal as part of what is known as Case 002/02, but efforts are also being made to include rape outside of forced marriage in future cases that have yet to be adjudicated.

Tuesday’s event aimed to bring Jolie into close contact with the community working to highlight these issues in Cambodia, and she assured them in her remarks that she was “here to listen.”

Excerpts from an upcoming documentary commissioned by the British Embassy on forced marriage were shown, which British Ambassador Bill Longhurst said “will expand this knowledge globally and highlight the efforts of the [Khmer Rouge tribunal] in prosecuting crimes related to forced marriage and other PSVI-related crimes.”
