Khmer Language Questions (Learning and Speaking Cambodian)

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

ive started doing this and it is good practice, ive actually found a way of mixing it up by watching "the Voice" on youtube, i get to listen to cambodia songs and also listening to the people talking in between as well :thumb:
Good for you Jamie. Since you have a personal tutor, this thread is quite quiet.
i want to get the songs/lyrics thread active again, i might start trying to translate some songs myself and you can judge hahaha :beer3:
Yes do it. i can help checking.

now ive started learning to read khmer, watching the music videos is fun now i can start picking out/recognizing words and theyre not just a bunch of squiggly lines haha

also for a bit of fun ive tried writing my families names in khmer,
can someone check how close (or not) i got them please...
ចិមី - Jamie (Jay-me)
ខារឡ - Carl (Kar-l)
ដិនីស - Denise (De-neese) (this one was a little hard)
ខិរី - Kerri (Kerry/Keh-ri)
ដាញីាេល - Daniel or maybe my northern tongue pronounces it more like: ដាញីយុល - (Dan-ni'yul)

feel free to rip it apart and point out any mistakes, its how one learns :thumb:

I was leaving this for the locals to respond, but whatever.
I am not an expert, so I'm probably wrong. Apologies.

I would have written Jamie as ចេមី
and Carl as ខាល. If you included the r in Carl it might be confused as the start of a second syllable.
And Kerri as ខេរី

Now, what does this say Jamie? មានមាន់ :whip:

yeah, i check on Google translate (not for the translation but for the Romany, just for cross reference) and apparently both of ours sound the same, just slightly diff choice of vowls but gives of the same/similar sounds,
deffo agree with the Carl one though, even google translate translates it as "Karl" as in the name haha :thumb:
this is the GT thing i was talking about...
ចេមី - che mi
ចិមី - che mi
ខាល - khal <-----your suggestion is much better than...
ខារឡ -khar l <---this one (mine)
ខេរី - khe ri
ខិរី -khe ri

ive only had i think 4 lessons so its nice to know im on the right track, watching the karaoke music videos the past few days has been great, i can actually see the words/sounds and not just squiggly lines, ill be able to translate my own songs soon haha

hahahha yeah i know this one, you taught me in the bar the other day! have chicken? :D

ive only had 4 lessons :plus1:

[edit] tbh i did have 2 months of learning to speak though so i know a lot of words already, im just learning how to spell them now, rather than the other way round, ive found this way far easier than when i tried learning to write last year with little knowledge of the words/sounds i was trying to create

Me too old to learn to read, but I like playing with the language especially through the music which I love. Living in Australia makes it difficult but when I return to Thailand or Cambodia I remember the basics.
In Cambodia when paying any bill I always sing butchered khmer pop lyrics like this-
loi loi loi loi
loi deng snai ha
loi loi loi
ot mien song saa
It's always funny especially with an exaggerated shrug.
And calling people mook gdaw-dickhead and mook gdooey- cunt face. Always aimed at the niek mien, the rich cunts. The workers love it. And one more , very self deprecating phrase which Khmers love-knom bproh barang le him le harm.
Le him le harm means you are on the bones of your arse.
This was never me.
