Dear all tourists and other foreigners visiting and living..
Saw this posted on the Expats and locals living in Siem Reap, Cambodia FB page, accompanied by a couple of pictures of scantily clad tourists...I'm confused by the text in bold, is he talking about actual oral sex, or kissing
Tourism "Khmer Custom" by Hem Sophoan,
Dear all tourists and other foreigners visiting and living in Cambodia, please be kindly aware and attention during your visit and living within Cambodian land, you should learn much about Khmer culture and custom of Khmer. Khmer is pretty strict with doing something involving their custom and culture such as, going into Buddhist monastery with barefoot and hate off, no underwear in public street or local area, no oral sex (sucking mouth) in public and so on. From the photos you may see some tourists driving motor by themselves wearing their shorts, but Khmer have considered as underwear, along the road in public that make local residents feel unhappy and satisfied with your culture bringing to Cambodia. I hope you understand well about the way of respect one's local culture and custom. "Respect a local culture and custom means you are respecting you yourself too!" 18 Oct 2014

Re: Dear all tourists and other foreigners visiting and livi
I believe this Cambodian speaker is referring to kissing, but I understand the confusion due to clumsy diction which invites double entendre. I also don't understand the reciprocity of " "Respect a local culture and custom means you are respecting you yourself too!' Does that mean I should drive like a mad fool and throw trash along the street, spit or sneeze without covering my mouth at a restaurant? I respect much of this culture having lived here for many years, but there is much that should change. Indeed, it is inevitable for all cultures evolve due to foreign influence. This is of course clear to those who have lived in a democratic multicultural society, something that is recent in Cambodia-at least on such a large scale. If this person thinks that shorts on a street are worn only by foreigners then a visit to Phnom Penh will disavail him from pursuing this illusion. All cultures should preserve the essential values of their traditions but not fight change that other members accept. I find no fault with the clothing code he endorses for wats, but elsewhere it depends entirely on circumstances. There are those Cambodians who do not understand that the world is not going to join Cambodia, but that Cambodia must join the world. They can't have our language without the culture; it's a package deal.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

It would be worthwhile to send him a message prompting him to correct that. Maybe he confused the term 'suck-face'.PSD-Kiwi wrote:Saw this posted on the Expats and locals living in Siem Reap, Cambodia FB page, accompanied by a couple of pictures of scantily clad tourists...I'm confused by the text in bold, is he talking about actual oral sex, or kissing

I often ride past the pub street areas. Sometimes I see white chicks wearing a thin, silky underwear and singlet with a 60kg backpack walking a long the road; if you zoom in long enough you could actually see their clits. I am not complaining. The motodops, tuktuk, vendors dude and the like love it.

And time for people to stop wearing their pyjamas out in the street, it's culturally offensive to some people.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Respect the local culture - pyjamas are part of what makes Cambodia unique ! (Especially the Disney-themed ones, which combine good taste from east and west.)Duncan wrote:And time for people to stop wearing their pyjamas out in the street, it's culturally offensive to some people.
