Yes in Cambodia we do. Most husband would give all the money he earns to his wife.Jamie_Lambo wrote:i cant remember if its here or thailand where the men gives all the money to the woman and she is in charge of the money? or am i getting mixed up with something else?

as i suspected these rules for women are designed to keep males in thrall.
it seems to be working very well.

Yes, no one is perfect. Even I don't agree 100% of the law, but many things I learn from it. What I like the most when I didn't have to buy my shoes often like other girls who walk loudly.Mr Curious wrote:no one can be perfect. No thing. It's a stupid concept. I just adapt what I think good for me. Respect husbands is what every women should do , not only Cambodian women. Wife is like the back feet and men like the front feet. However men and women are equal. Happiness can't happen only one side( I mean husband or wife) but together. I like this law but I don't like if wife depends on husband, follow husband even he is rough or bad to her.MekongMouse wrote:You should behave how you want, little moon. I think marrying a man who is so traditional as to care about this stuff or judge you is a bad idea anyway, as he probably holds very conservative views on women's rights and will treat you like property. I agree with taabarang completely on this... khmer women are held to ridiculous standards and there is no reason for it except "tradition" and sexism.

People have suggested that I should learn to read and write Cambodian in order to enlarge my vocabulary and not talk like a peasant. It is precisely because of "literature"like this didactic piece of shit that I shun formal education in Cambodia. I have to struggle to finish it in English without gagging and I know somewhere along the line some well meaning professor would think that I couldn't lead a good much less meaningful life without learning this piece of drivel. Where is good MODERN literature in Cambodia? So,for those of you who are so inclined to this type of brainless fodder, just put on your khao slip yieah (granny panties) and start reading.
If all works out well, I will continue my attack on some of the traditional cultural values of this country. They might have had value years ago, but now they are like the guests at a party who hang around drinking long after the party is over. It's time for them to go home.

This isn't literature so much as folk wisdom. There's plenty of crap that comes out of the English language writing machine (Twilight, The Da Vinci Code, etc. all unreadable crap). This is also true of the English language song writing machine (anything sung by Beyonce, Westlife, etc.) An exploration of French, German, Greek, Russian, Arabic, etc. literature and music reveals the same thing.taabarang wrote:People have suggested that I should learn to read and write Cambodian in order to enlarge my vocabulary and not talk like a peasant. Writing off a culture's literature based on a single piece seems a touch hasty to me.
