Agreed. Poipet is an eyesore but I have been to places like Kibera (Nairobi, Kenya). It makes Poipet look like paradise.

You couldn't be more wrong. I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria (consistently voted the worst place to be an expat in the world - though occasionally losing out to Port Harcourt which is also in Nigeria). Much of Africa's awfulness is accidental. Poipet is awful completely by design.phuketrichard wrote:TheGrinchSR wrote:In fairness nothing is as bad as Poipet... quite simply the worst town on earth.Mr Curious wrote:it can't be as bad as Poipet can it? Not having been there YET, based on all I've read, I can agree with "colorful" I'm hoping to get tips on where to go and see from Sammy.TheGrinchSR wrote:How long can it take to write "shithole" anyway? Been thru there a few times, stayed once and not even close to the worst

Maybe for a 55 year old confirmed bachelor (and without the fruity implication), but for the single 21 to 35 year old white foreigner it is probably more preferable to be based in a European or Europeanized region like South America.
The abundance of sad young teachers OD'ing alone in an awful looking broom closet after months of working for peanuts makes me think elsewhere may be preferable until you're grey.

Some of those things on his list are not really advantages for being a single man in Cambodia, as they apply to everyone equally. He should have stuck to a top 10 list. Lat time I was in Nairobi, I heard a story of a Japanese man who had basically got off the plane and ended up wandering around Kibera with his ruck-sack et al. After a short time, he was left in the middle of the street wearing just his underpants. A nice touch was that a little boy came running up after and gave him his passport back. Apologies if I've told this one before.

Yeah, I lived in Africa for 40 years, was shocked the first time I saw Poipet.TheGrinchSR wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2016 12:02 pmYou couldn't be more wrong. Personally I find poipet a whole lot of fun probly the most photogenic suburb of KoW and interesting "Hood" in SEA deninatly not for the faint hearted or the barangs who lived a sheltered life.vladimir wrote: ↑Fri Jul 14, 2017 5:25 amYeah, I lived in Africa for 40 years, was shocked the first time I saw Poipet.TheGrinchSR wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2016 12:02 pmYou couldn't be more wrong. I'm not sure an aversion to filth, dodgy types and squalor equates to being sheltered.
Sounds like common sense to me.
