Count the number of less than 2 year old, top of the range vehicles on any main st in any given area at lunch time or rush hour. ( Not holidays as they're all down in bloody SHV :-( ) Out of 1000 cars, what percentage would be this say compared to average 10 to 15 years old runabouts. Only a rough estimate, but compared to 5 years ago there were probably less than half these high class vehicles on the roads. Not all on finance I would think.

Sure, but I wouldn't consider people driving new high-end cars as middle-class.

Nobody in my village. Most have lost land to MFIs.
@TB I suppose this is what is behind the recent announcements from HE about MFIs being separate from govt ? ( ie Don't blame the govt for your losses.)

The middle class is what is wedged between the rich and poor. Lets define it as above $2 p. day and below $100 p.day. Although, it should also include say about $4000 in savings for emergencies. And with any luck some life/ health/ dental/ public liability and loss of earnings insurance at approx $3-400 per month. So maybe you need to be earning a min of about $12-15 p day to really be considered at the lower end of middle class. Then you're really rockin lol.

What does it say in that doc?

From $2-below $100. That net will catch a lot of fish.

just because you see a khmer on a 2016 honda dream or has a nice watch, gold rings etc etc doesnt mean they are middle class
their possessions are their bank a lot of the time,
a lot like to give off the impression that their middle class, dressing smart riding a nice bike etc
but go back to their homes and then make your judgements
i think a lot would be surprised tbh (not aimed at anyone just the general foreign public)

Go along "Khmer Pub Street" in Siem Reap in the evening and count the gleaming SUVs outside the KTV/prostitution joints. How many
mobile phone shops are there near Kralahn Market - a far-from-posh area of town - nearby?

Glitter is misleading but there's no doubt that well over 50% of the people are better off than they were a mere decade ago.

That said, you see entire families collecting cans and plastic bottles.

50% ??? Not in rural Cambodia. Cost of living negates slightly higher incomes.
