Best option for short term cell phone plan
I know this is a bit of a lame question but I am not much of a techie. I have a Samsung Galaxy 4 and want to get the best plan I can get to be able to call and text to Canada and to have internet access for the 3 weeks that I am in Cambodia. Would using skype while connected be the best option? I don't want people who I call back home to incur charges if I can avoid that. I also have a really low tech phone that I used 4 years ago that was really cheap to use for texting home and worked nicely to phone locally, but of course no internet. Would I be able to use my Galaxy as a wifi hub (or whatever you call it) if I brought my laptop? Or would I just be better off to just rely on wifi from cafes or my hotel?
Oh and DUH!!!! I know this sounds pretty basic for the techies out there

Yes, you can 'hotspot' your SG4 to give your laptop data, but depending on the age of your lappie the inbuilt wifi might be an older, slower generation. Why not consider paid Skype directly on your SG4?sammycooke wrote:I know this is a bit of a lame question but I am not much of a techie. If you are in Phnom Penh qb is the best internet wise.
If you are traveling around Cambodia either metphone or Mobitel.

Avoid Smart, seems to be a biggie company but always their service sucked when I had them.
Don't know about qb but I vote for metphone/mobitel also. I have home internet with Metphone and cellphone service with Mobitel, works in the province good, internet still crap but enough for emails.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S...I think it is the first model...I don't exactly know. I use it to pick up wifi. It picks signals up very well. I used to walk around looking for a good signal to get connected. I use a cheap older clamshell phone with a cheap SIM bought near Soriya Mall....like $5 SIM that you can top up anywhere that sells the scratch off cards. That way I get free intenet access with the galaxy and I can use the phone for texts and calls. Even international calls are not that expensive. Bottom line: You can easily get by on $5 to $10 a week.

I prefer CellCard, which has always worked fine for both calls and internet.
Can get 3.5 GB of internet for $5 a month that rolls over if you don't use it all.

I got that package on your and a few other posters recommendation last trip. First class customer service at their showroom nearest to Monivong. Started switching the internet off when I wasn't using it and then realised I was using bugger all of my 3.5 Gb allowance so had it on all the time. Great deal.General Mackevili wrote:I prefer CellCard, which has always worked fine for both calls and internet.

Did you get true 3G with that at Murray's, or only Edge? I see 3G about 15 seconds a day...General Mackevili wrote:I prefer CellCard, which has always worked fine for both calls and internet.
